Presidential Candidate Position Matrix

I don't disagree with the above posters on (part of) the cause here, but a huge, walloping part of the issue is the way the entire political system is set up. First-Past-The-Post encourages a strictly two-party system, and both the Republicans and Democrats (but especially the Republicans) actively foster a "with us or against us" mentality, as well as a, "you don't want to throw your vote away by voting on someone who has no chance of winning, do you?" attitude. Winning - having voted for the winning side, that is - is portrayed, and viewed, as something desirable in and of itself.
