America West confident
of US Airways deal
TEMPE, AZ, United States (UPI) -- The head of the America West, the Arizona airline set to buy US Airways, is not worried other bidders may scotch his acquisition plans.
Doug Parker, chief executive of America West, expressed his confidence a proposed deal with the bankrupt carrier will go forward despite a bankruptcy judge`s giving US Airways 30 days to find a better offer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday.
A US Airways lawyer called the judge`s Tuesday decision a chance for the carrier to "shake the tree" for higher and better offers.
Parker said no one else is likely to come up with an offer as comprehensive as his airline`s $1.5 billion proposal to unite the nation`s seventh- and eighth-largest airlines, an unusually complex deal involving at least a half-dozen financing players plus two companies.
