Nw Threatens To Hire Scab Pilots Too

Surely the ALPA agreement at Champion prevents this from happening....

Dont you mean the ALPA agreement at NWA?

ALPA pilots are so used to crossing picket lines would it really suprise you to see that? Would the pilots even picket?

I thought NWA had a pretty big stake in Champion (maybe in the past??)?

Also nice to see "Minister of Propaganda" Jon Austin has washed up again...

The scope clause in the pilots contract covers regularly scheduled flights.

The important part of the article was the following:

Using Champion pilots to operate Northwest flights would be "a clear violation of our contract," said Mark McClain, chairman of the pilots union.

He said the pilots union contract allows Northwest to use Champion for charter flights, but requires scheduled service flights to be flown by Northwest pilots.

So NW canx all their scheduled flights in a market and temporarily stops serving city ABC, makes up "New Chartered Flight" markets instead.
ie. NW operates 8am/12n/4pm/8pm flights, now those are canx and they run a 9am/2pm/7pm from Champion or something similar between the hub and the "new charter" market.

Obviously "DOUG" is pulling out all the stops, "on paper" !!!!!!!

What actually transpires, is another thing.

But I've got to be honest, I really can't get a "sense of this one" !!!!!!!!!

The AMFA thing is(I think), a NO Brainer !! Meaning, if your an AMT in the(say) bottom 25-40 percentile, your doomed either way. So logically, YOU WALK !!

Broadly speaking, as I understand it,

its not what the flight is "called" i, e., charter vs schedule, it's where it goes. If it is
between two points that has existing service then it is "scheduled service" for the sake of our scope language. Now if the company wants to take a bunch of RJs and put them on the same route, then that might be a different story as the language concerning the use of smaller planes as definitely be weakened in recent years in an effort ironically enough to "help the company in these financially difficult times"

On a personal note, I think the company is making as much noise as possible before the strike deadline in an effort to show just how prepared they are. Wherther they or not, I don't know. If and when the strike happens, then i think the company will do everythiny it can to keep flying and the pilots contract along with everyone else's be damned. Kind of a "let them file a grievance" mentality as we just saw with the recent court ruling concerning the flight attendants.

There are links between Champion and NWA. I believe they even share board members.

why would you say that?

NWA is tightening the screws on all of their unions, not just AMFA. Grieveance counts are climbing and little is being settled.

More managers are being added while the union staffing are decreasing. Grievances that are settled are being ignored or questioned again.

I'm sure they want their new spinoff to be a non-union carrier.

Talked last night at length with a Champion pilot here at the crash pad in St. Louis. Really important points.

1. There is nothing in the Champions pilots' contract that protects/prevents them from flying trips for NW, and nothing in the contract that would enable them to refuse to fly the trip.
2. Champions ALPA MEC is keeping NWA ALPA MEC informed of everything going on from the Champions side vis-a-vis flying trips for NW.
3. Having Champions fly scheduled trips for NW is a clear violation of the NW ALPA scope clause.
4. NW MEC has filed for accelerated grievance on the trips flown by Champions yesterday or the day before.

As someone else pointed out, it's like the company is daring all the unions to file grievances. Kind of like a playground showdown. "Oh Yeah? Well, make me!"

Sounds to me like management is setting it's unions up to take the PR hit when they file BK in September.
