No Bogata for US

Yes I know...it's Bogota

Fingers just dont work well anymore.

This is just one less international flight to screw up for US as far as I'm concerned.

There are several criteria I think US uses to determine what aircraft will operate on a MAINLINE flight:

US Airways asks themselves:
  1. Can it be flown with a Dash-8?
  2. If so, screw mainline use Dash-8
  3. If not, can it be flown with a CRJ?
  4. If it can, screw mainline and use CRJ
  5. If not, can it be flown with a CRJ900?
  6. If so, screw mainline fly with CRJ900
  7. If it can't, wait a sec...we HAVE no mainline planes left..we gave them back during bankruptcy.
  8. Oh wait, there are a few old ones over there.
  9. Can it be flown with a 737-300 or -400?
  10. If yes, fly with 737. If no, cancel flight...the 757's are flying across the pond.

Do you want to know why I think that US was denied this route? The person at the DOT who is responsible for making the decision flies a TON of ultra-short-haul routes on US -- and decided to get even instead of getting mad!

Just as well since we don't want the entire reservation dept outsourced anymore than it is right now! Surely they would have had that idea in mind.

On a lighter note, Latin American routes would most definately be a plus for us. Let them tackle China first.....

Does anyone know how many reservation agents are outsourced? I know everytime I call I get India, or who knows where? I know at HP, because we were a regional airline, I always talked to one of our own! Is this going to continue? Really tough for our customers to get anywhere when talking to people that really don't know the airline throughout. It's a major struggle.

What cities in South America can US start service to without seeking government approal?

LIM is the only one that would be feasible. BOG and CCS are both limited-entry, and US hasn't been invited to those parties. There are a few other smaller cities that US would lose their shirt in, and US doesn't have the equipment (nor in most cases the slots) to serve deep South America.

According to MAH4546, the O&D between CLT and BOG is something less than two passengers each day. No wonder US wasn't awarded any frequencies. Even ATL-China and PHL-China have better O&D. :D

First - CLT is not an O&D hub for US, it's a connecting hub.
Second - looking at current international O&D, or connectivity for/of an area which has NO flights or history to South America as a major criteria for success is short sighted. It doesn't count the number of people who have used other domestic and international gateways to transit because they had no better choice. Further, unless one has the passenger count for all major cities within the US system to Columbia, it is not possible to forecast the success or failure of a future non-stop connecting service through CLT. Also, like China, South America is potentially more advantageous for Cargo rather than passenger revenue/yields.
