Well looks like WN will be expanding into EWR in March of 2011, thanks to the New United.

Newark is Not Slot Controlled by the DOT, HOWEVER, because of Space Constraints durring the Peak Times, EWR is very Slot Controlled by the PANY&NJ.
My guess it that WN will get several Gates at Terminal A from UAL.
AirTran pulled out of EWR and gave CO their slots in exchange for LGA and DCA Slots... http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/08/airtran_airways_plans_to_stop.html

Just saw the press release! Awesome news for EWR!!! Finally some compeition for Continental/United!

People have been predicting similar outcomes for WN since they announced the start of operations in BWI - "Just wait till they get a taste of winter ops in the NE - they'll go back to TX with their tail between their legs" was prevalent back then.

Southwest announced today EWR service beginning March 27. (Terminal A)
Initially offering six weekday roundtrips between EWR and MDW and two daily roundtrips between EWR and STL, with connecting service beyond MDW and STL to 48 other SW destinations. Later in 2011, more flights will be added, fully utilizing the 18 pairs of slots recently acquired through the merger of
United and Continental.
