More merger talk form Doug

I still say it will be Alaska. A good strategy to make everyone think it will be a NWA or DAL merger then all of the sudden, snap it's Alaska.

I think that would be a nice fit. Question is, is Alaska ready to merge? They seem to be doing fine on thier own ;)

Question is: what does Alaska have that we want (or can't have on our own)?
Northwest has Asia. That way, Doug controls the world...

Asia is the crown jewel and the main reason Doug wants to hook up with NWA. I don't think US needs or wants alaska...

Profit propels US Airways to top - Turnaround has CEO eyeing more (corporate transaction) deals

No one is seeing anything close to the improvements we have seen," Mr. Parker said in a conference call yesterday with analysts and reporters. The results prove, he said, "what tremendous value can be created through consolidation."

For that reason, Mr. Parker remains interested in a possible combination with another bankrupt carrier -- both Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines are in that camp.

"It would be negligent for us to ignore the fact that there are two airlines still in bankruptcy that will have to emerge at some point." When that happens, Mr. Parker expects to explore the possibility of a merger if it is part of the emerging carrier's strategy. "We would have to be there or we wouldn't be doing our jobs."

Asked if Mr. Parker was actively engaged in any conversations with rival airlines, the chief executive stumbled a bit and said: "I probably should not comment on that."

I still think NW, with their Asian routes going to AA, would make the most sense if US wants to merge with someone else. Those domestic fortress hubs fit in nicely with LCC's strategy.

NW sounds great but their union relations / employee relations seem to be in the crapper and have been for a long time. That's a difficult hurdle.

PSA/Piedmont Syndrome......

Just curious...was the circumstances the same? Crippled airline on it's deathbed merging with an ailing one. Neither of them having any cash for a decent burial and turned a profit the first two qtrs after the merger?

I think they should sit back and realize success for awhile and get used to making money before they radically complicate the recipe...

;)

Regarding the "I probably should not comment on that" quote from Doug, I don't think that was a slip at all, and I don't think it means anything is going on.

I think the only thing Doug meant by that is he doesn't want any more words to be twisted and take on a life of their own.

Slip up? I think not. It is not like he wouldn't have expected that question and had a prearranged answer for it.

He could just be trying to keep the other carriers guessing about what his next move will be and left the door open for anybody who might want to talk to him.
