However since this is about the potential closure of a maintenance base, it would seem that the company is playing the cities against themselves.

Please... I don''t think that the company would use anything other than cost as the determining factor in deciding to close or keep a particular base.

Is that not the same thing Eric? Who can offer the best deal etc..?

I personaly don''t want to see any of the bases closed! If things should happen to turn arround, A..A. will need all three! But yes, A.A. is pitting one base against another! They are good at that! And until the Union (TWU,or AMFA) figures a way to break this cycle, they''ll always have us by the short hairs!

I expect the decision to be made based on cost AND how much each city (Kansas City and Ft Worth) is willing to give in incentives.

The key to keeping all of the bases open is to get back the work that has been outsourced. Can they do the work cheaper in house now? Probably

Hopeful,
Let me know if my hunch is wrong(I know you will)

Here goes,
AA "floats" the rumors that a lot of work will be sent MCI''s way, in an "end around attempt" to somehow "scare"(WITHOUT EVER COMING OUT IN SO MANY WORDS, AND SAYING SO) AMT''s from voting for AMFA.
I mean, would''nt it make sense that AA would try ANYTHING to protect their NEW BEST FRIEND, the TWU ??

NH/BB''s

Please!! AA senior management has been watching NWA and Alaska #### slap amfa around for a few years now so I doubt they''re losing any sleep about them. AA''s management will eat them for lunch!

The question of outsourced work has been there for many years. in 1983 the average wage for mechanics, especially at TUL was cut in half and yet the out sourcing continues. I beleive Kevin Gorams of TWU local 514 stated that the TWU allows 38% of the budget for farm out.

How about lowering wages and benefits enough to open repair stations in every state? That way we can keep more dues payers in place.

Eric,
My point exactly.( $$$ cost)

It would (in the long run) COST the company less, to have the "lilly livered" twu on the property, than AMFA !!

Ps.
Notice how I (for the first time) spelled twu with "lower case letters"? I WILL NEVER HONOR THOSE USELESS BASTARDS(twu) WITH CAPITAL LETTERS , EVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!!

Why is it that it seems all these threads seem to degenerate into a debate on A.M.F.A vs the TWU ??????

Or maybe it''s that someone just happens to be narrow minded! And I''m trying to be deplomatic here!

So you vote out the TWU and vote in AMFA.

I guess they will bring wage money with them?

That will not do anything for the company''s revenue. That is where the wage money comes from if I am not mistaken.

Bring in someone that feels obligated to play hardball to please the membership. We will all be out of a job in no time.

But hey you fought for your trade.

That argument doesn''t work here xlurker...too many details to hash out on a message board.

With all due respect, I have been thru a base closing in 1988. I have also seen many class II stations closed. They WILL and HAVE closed a station for reasons other than profitability. They will not tell the base that is closing until just weeks before it closes. In OAK, they kept holding weekly meetings telling us we were going to be open 5 more years, guaranteed. Then they came out and said it was closing. Caught eveyone off guard. That is the way the do business.

The most interest rumor I have heard (it is only a RUMOR) is that when AA took over MCI in BK, they were given a 10 year moratorium on the EPA clean up. If they leave the station within 10 years, they are not responsible for the clean up. MCI rent is $1mil a year. AFW rent is $6mil a year. TUL is close to nothing, like $100. Another interesting fact is that AFW never reached the local hiring agreements reached with Ft. Worth in exchange for the tax breaks they received. I have heard from first hand witnesses that Boeing has been out and measured the floors in AFW.

Also, just prior to AA closing OAK, they also sent management and crew chiefs out to see how OAK was putting out so much more work. One example I do recall is OAK put out 6x as many seats per employee in the seat shop as TUL did. None of this mattered. They still closed them.

This E.P.A. thing is new to me! I''ve been through the bayout/merger, and been here well before, and this is the first I''ve heard on that one! But there is one thing I have heard, and I''m sure someone will correct me if I''m wrong, but the rent on AFW is not $6 mil.@year, but $36 mil@year! And let''s not forget the $110 mil. Bond Issue the City has o.k.ed to renovate this place!
