AA and Oneworld is old news. BA and US are old news too, but who knows? If Peaches and Herb reunited who's to say US And BA won't be singing the same song? Oneworld is a bit of a mess right now as Mexicana now jooins JAL as the lastest member in bankruptcy court. Skyteam would be very intriguing. And according to this article the DL/US slot swap debacle may have some legs after all, although not in the manner it was first proposed. Interesting.

Just more analysts opining.

US has stated they are not leaving *A, its the most profitable airline alliance and has the most to offer passengers world wide.

I don't put much stock in an article which suggests a DL-US acquisition(see page 2 paragraph 1). Do these people really think the DOJ would allow two of the largest east coast carriers to combine? AA and Oneworld have a much better chance of acquiring US and IMHO this is what will ultimately happen!

Actually, SK never said US isn't leaving Star. He just stated US's preference is to stay in Star because it is the largest and best alliance. Publicly, he must say this. It is very carefully worded as to not rattle the few very loyal high-paying customers we have that also depend on Star. US can't afford to do that just yet, until Oneworld or Skyteam are finalized. My guess is Oneworld is making some very attractive offers, behind closed doors, to US for possible options; Skyteam, not so much.

the Department of Transportation's rejection of a proposed slot swap between Delta and US Airways creates the impetus for Delta to seek to acquire US Airways
Interesting, :D

You can basically infer from comments Kirby has made that staying in *A and working on having a closer relationship with *A airlines is the plan and that they would only look to switch alliances if OW or SkyTeam offer US a JV/ATI and *A refuses to consider something similar.

FWIW, US continues to strengthen its relationship with *A as much as possible and has announced new codeshares with JJ, SN, and TK, and an expanded codeshare with JK in just the past few months.

Why wouldn't *A want to offer US an JV/ATI??

We have flights at our station from PHL and CLT in the evening with a great number of bags with bag tags originating from LH as well as SN, SK and other Star carriers. Some flights it seems to be a majority of LH tags. Outbound is about the same. Can't imagine some of these flights without Star. We should concentrate on making LH love us. They are the 800-pound canary in the room.

"Marginalize" profits? Could you explain that please?

The more people you invite to the tea party, the less tea their is for each individual?

I dunno. It was just a guess as to why they wouldn't want US to become part of it.

Ok I get your point about profit dilution, but I wasn't sure of the rest. I'm all for remaining in the Star Alliance. It no doubt is the premiere alliance on the planet. Germany is the largest and most stable economy in Europe. Frankfurt and Munich are great connecting hubs. And we know what UAL/CO offer as the anchor carrier in the largest economy in the world. But if another alliance offers US ATI and Star refuses, then we'd have to take a look at it. I hope we remain in Star.

What is the operational cost associated with the star alliance? There may lay the answer should US stay or go? HP style
