Southwest Airlines to Begin Mediation With Flight Attendants on Contract Negotiations
DALLAS (AP) -- Southwest Airlines and representatives of a flight attendants' union are scheduled to begin a new round of contract negotiations with a federal mediator on Thursday.
The union said it was the first time in Southwest's 32-year history that talks with flight attendants had gone to federal mediation.
The two sides held more than 16 months of negotiations but remained apart on pay, retirement benefits and other issues. According to the Transport Workers Union, the starting wage for a new flight attendant is $14,000, and the median pay is $24,600.
One sticking point is cleanup work. Flight attendants say they are forced to work for free by cleaning planes between flights and that the duty adds up to 300 hours per year. The airline says the work is part of the job for which the employees are paid.
The company said last month that the talks were at an impasse, and it asked the National Mediation Board to step in.
In trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Southwest shares were down 10 cents to close at $18.60.
Hey Southwest, Just threaten Bankruptcy - They'll give you the farm "without further ratification"
