High Traffic, High Costs

ARLINGTON (theHub.com) - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced an 18.7 percent increase in international passenger traffic for the first eight months of 2004, over 2003.

Despite the fact that the SARS epidemic negatively impacted the same travel period last year, IATA noted that January to August 2004 passenger traffic was still 8.4 percent over the same period in 2000, a time period of few trials to the airline industry. IATA also reported that with increased passenger capacity in both domestic and international markets, August traffic remained at 78.3 percent of capacity.

IATA's Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani said that in the face of high traffic, high costs remain a problem. “Airlines have done a great job of reducing costs with some very difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, the high price of fuel is eating up these gains and more,â€￾ he said.

Respectfully,
