High risk uninsured....hope you last 6 months

I would rather see costs brought under control. There is no reason that I have heard that can justify the costs that hospitals and doctors charge.

My mother breaks her elbow in Berlin and has to have surgery. Several screws and 2 or 3 plates. Eleven days in a semi-private room with PT and IV-drugs. Cost to us, under $5k (this was in the late 90's). I have hernia surgery in Feb of this year and I had to bring $1250 as my part of the cost. I saw the bill to the insurance company and it was over $15k. What do you think the cost would have been for an uninsured patient? OH yea, there would not have been on because they could not have afforded it. Why should a simple hernia surgery cost 3 times more (minimum) than 11 days in the hospital, surgery ... etc?

The Germans have the same technology we have, people are not dying in the streets. Their doctors and nurses make a fair living and provide excellent care. Why does the US seem to be incapable of duplicating it?

As for the insurance side of it. I am inclined to want to do away with the insurance companies. I am thinking that everyone contributes to a massive pool. Just like income tax the cost is a percentage of your income. That essentially buys you an insurance policy. You go to any doctor or hospital and they will treat you. You make the decision as to what treatment you want or don't want. The number of people such as my self who rarely get sick will more than compensate for the kid who needs expensive Chemo or other costly treatments. And no it is not optional. You buy it because one day you might need it and you like everyone else want's to live.

While we are at it, why not allow the money to be used at any hospital any where in the world. If a US hospital is going to charge $20,000 for something and you can find a hospital in India willing to do it for $8k you can go. As long as the total cost does not exceed what it would cost herein the US, go for it. How much do you want to bet that the domestic cost of treatment falls?

I would love to see international insurance companies or governments fight to provide us health care. I would be tempted to buy an inexpensive plan for catastrophic care. If I need a double hernia repaired I can go to Costa Rica and have it done for $4k or stay here and pay $14k. Which would you choose?

What if you need a double hip and a knee replaced? You don't have insurance but you need the surgery. Do you want o pay $30k or $125K. Go to Bangalore and you save nearly $100k for quality health care.

If the medical world does not watch out and if people keep fighting to prevent reform of our medical infrastructure, it might go the way of Chrysler and US steel. Then where will you go for care?

That's awfully Christian of you. As I said...let the die in the streets.

No one said let them die in OUR streets, just send them back across the border and let THEIR country provide FREE healthcare to them !

As I have said many times before.

Who do you think pays for their care now?

Instead of some "expletive the aliens", just answer the question.

If this bill makes it all the way through get ready to see its constitutionality challenged. Especially the part of forcing us to purchase a product.

Tech, just because we already pay for "Illeagal Alien Healthcare", via illeagal aliens over-crowding emergency rooms, doesn't make it right or a moot point !

And just where did I post *Expletive Aliens* ?

What do the asterisks represent..."Pat I'd like to buy a vowel....is there a U".

There is 1 "U" KC, please spin again or would you like to solve the puzzle?

How about we put the alien issue aside for a moment. Who do you think pays for all the US citizens who do not have health insurance? Hell, who do you think pays for out rages deductibles that have to paid after the fact like the $2,000 I am not going to pay? They had me fork over $1250 up front to pay for the surgery and a few month later they decide they were off on their calculations and want $2k more. Yea, that will happen right after I sprout wings and fly (go ahead Dell, find a picture of a cat with wings..... I know you can do it.)

Bottom line is our health system is broken. It has been broken for decades. There are a lot of people making a lot of money at our expense. People are being denied care by hospitals and by insurance companies. Drug companies are making a fortune. Lawyers are making a fortune. Hospitals are making a fortune. Mean while a simple hernia operation runs over $15,000 and that is for someone who has insurance. For someone uninsured it is probably closer to $20k or $30k. So someone who is uninsured has to who it does not get worse and kill him or go into debt to save his life. Some choice.

I think substituting the intended letters with asterisks is a grosso no no under the rules of combat and decency of this forum..........

out rages????

Our health system has been broke for decades? Hmm, I don't recall my parents paying thousands of dollars when my Dad had open heart surgery and an aortic aneurysm? I believe it cost somewhere around $100,000 or more and that was in '91.
