I would rather see costs brought under control. There is no reason that I have heard that can justify the costs that hospitals and doctors charge.
My mother breaks her elbow in Berlin and has to have surgery. Several screws and 2 or 3 plates. Eleven days in a semi-private room with PT and IV-drugs. Cost to us, under $5k (this was in the late 90's). I have hernia surgery in Feb of this year and I had to bring $1250 as my part of the cost. I saw the bill to the insurance company and it was over $15k. What do you think the cost would have been for an uninsured patient? OH yea, there would not have been on because they could not have afforded it. Why should a simple hernia surgery cost 3 times more (minimum) than 11 days in the hospital, surgery ... etc?
The Germans have the same technology we have, people are not dying in the streets. Their doctors and nurses make a fair living and provide excellent care. Why does the US seem to be incapable of duplicating it?
As for the insurance side of it. I am inclined to want to do away with the insurance companies. I am thinking that everyone contributes to a massive pool. Just like income tax the cost is a percentage of your income. That essentially buys you an insurance policy. You go to any doctor or hospital and they will treat you. You make the decision as to what treatment you want or don't want. The number of people such as my self who rarely get sick will more than compensate for the kid who needs expensive Chemo or other costly treatments. And no it is not optional. You buy it because one day you might need it and you like everyone else want's to live.
While we are at it, why not allow the money to be used at any hospital any where in the world. If a US hospital is going to charge $20,000 for something and you can find a hospital in India willing to do it for $8k you can go. As long as the total cost does not exceed what it would cost herein the US, go for it. How much do you want to bet that the domestic cost of treatment falls?
I would love to see international insurance companies or governments fight to provide us health care. I would be tempted to buy an inexpensive plan for catastrophic care. If I need a double hernia repaired I can go to
Costa Rica and have it done for $4k or stay here and pay $14k. Which would you choose?
What if you need a double hip and a knee replaced? You don't have insurance but you need the surgery. Do you want o pay $30k or $125K. Go to
Bangalore and you save nearly $100k for quality health care.
If the medical world does not watch out and if people keep fighting to prevent reform of our medical infrastructure, it might go the way of Chrysler and US steel. Then where will you go for care?
