Hmmmm ....

Delta announces a huge reduction of service to Cincinnati (Covington, KY actually!).

SWA has temporarily terminated all service to New Orleans. (May reopen with 6-8 flights/day in a month or two, down from 56/day.)

SWA has aircraft ready to redeploy and displaced employees that need work.

If its costs are reasonable, is CVG too good of an opportunity for SWA to pass up?

According to the CVG Airport Website shows that no "major" LCC currently serves CVG.

[Disclaimer: I have absolutely no idea what ideas may be hatching within the SWA strategic planning room.]

O and D traffic in CVG isn't quite as robust as it might seem at first glance.

Is the reason for a low O&D number because there isn't a viable LCC in the market? Perhaps the local LCC-fliers are driving to CMH or SDF, both existing SWA markets.

Dropping between these two already-existing markets may not make sense. Still, it's interesting to ponder.

I'd guess its some of both. I've flown through CVG dozens of times, but almost always originating in SDF because it's usually cheaper. Most of the time I try to fly WN, but, DL used to be the big dog in this area and many times its connections were far superior.

IND in addition to CMH and SDF also draws off some CVG O&D.

With regard to CVG, it may not be as ripe as PIT and PHL because DL customers around here don't seem to have the residual enmity toward Delta that many of USAir's customers had. It's been 15 years since I've flown US, and hope to at least double that.

Don't forget DAY, which only half as far as SDF/CMH/IND. AirTran has a sucessful operation there. Remember when DAY was a PI hub?

I certainly think that SWA could make a go of 15-20 flights a day. MDW-4/5, BWI-3/4, MCO-1/2, TPA-1/2, HOU-2/3, PHX-1/2, LAS-1/2. Just my thoughts............

Are fares so much cheaper out of CMH and SDF to justify driving over 100 miles to either one? Even if they were, I bet they ain't now with the cost of gas!

Good point. Perhaps the cost of driving is a reason to add service to cities that are closer together.

Just because I have to keep pressing the issue and you wouldn't expect any less from me ...
I wonder if folks in East Dallas really want to have to drive all the way to DFW to get the low airfares SWA provides? Set Love Free and repeal the Wright Amendment as a fuel conservation measure! (Thanks for the new angle, jimntx!)
