Anyone care to give a blow by blow of what the west training is like? I'm to receive a training packet on Thur which now contains on-line-training cd. Worth six hours of class time.
Then a full day of hands on in CLT.
The East had a book to fill out with the correction key on the internet to check results. We turned in the book at hands on and took a test. I won't have the cd very long as I leave May 3rd.
I understand you train on cd every three months?
Thanks for your help.

I'm really not sure what they're doing here with Easties and this CD.
Westies have to do CBT (computer based training) every quarter, but its not a CD, we access thru the web on Compass. And its easy and painless.
We did have a CD for our ETOPS training, many of us had already gone thru the one day classroom, when they revised the training a little, and had to put out a supplemental workbork off a CD.
Hopefully, what you guys get is not as lame as that was for us.
Very hard to sit with your workbook on your lap in front of the 'puter and some questions did not make sense.
Many just copied answers from others, as they had already done the actual training.

West recurrent at the One Day level was new last year.
Its just a faster paced, little bit longer day, shorter breaks, don't get out early version of the 2day recurrent.
Just as easy, but moves faster and over in one day! Its a good thing.
'Cept I don't know anything about this CD they came up with for y'all.

Our recurrent training is easy. Don't sweat it! :)
We do our computer based training every 3 months and it's a good refresher.
Our recurrent training used to be two 8 hour days, but now it's only 1 day training and the rest is computer based. I usually do my computer training in the training center because there are trainers there that I can ask questions.

:)

The good thing about the quarterly CBT, is all FAs are continually being reminded of the same policies and procedures at the same time. And if there seems to be an area showing troubles online, they can address it in the next quarter.
You know how FAs get when they are fresh out of recurrent? And then they kinda start slacking off again as the year goes by?
Its not so noticeable if everyone is participating in the CBT every quarter.
Everyone is focused on the same issues at the same time.

Yes, it is a cd-rom powerpoint using a workbook. How long should I allow studing this before the class? Is there a test in class on the workbook? Our old recurrent class was so stressful...it seemed the instructors loved the control. Just wondering if it was like that or more f/a friendly.

OK....Sounds like I've been mislead into thinking this was new. Appreciate your help. Any idea on the ETB training?

My understanding is that the East side will not beging "west style" recurrent training until next year. You are still on the same program.

Just to further my education on this charming industry. What exactly is "Recurrent Training"?

Is it mandated by Law or past industry practice?

Its a yearly refresher course of various FAA mandated subject matter. It applies to pilots and FA's and it is required. The length of the program and actual content may vary from carrier to carrier.

To put is simply, we have to get re-trained every year on how to use emergency equipments, faa rules, emergency procedures, commands, safety requlations, first aid, aircraft familiarization etc. because just like the price of the tickets, they are always subject to change.

Not what my Supervisor or the training department informed me of. It's not a DVD/VCR its an interactive cd-rom and workbook. So, maybe its just the format thats changed for us. The actual hands on training remains the same?

Does the west do the same commands as the east? In fact are commands generic to all airlines?

PBob, We stay up to date on all changes in FAA rules and regulations during the general course of business each day. This once a year training is a review of those rules and regs but, also a hands on "lets play Emergency day", it can be filled with adrenaline as you never know what emergency you may be in. We roll play, open doors, emergency equipment, shout commands (come this way....leave belonging). Its a couriographed (sp)plan of expected and unexpected emergencies. The what ifs that we have on our mind when we fly. If a Pax has a heart attack, we have a plan and we can us paddles. If we need to land in an emergency we have a plan. Its written out, played out and both the piolots and F/A's train for it. When we are on our jumpseat taking off/landing, sitting on our hands, head back our minds are going over those first plans and our actions and our plan B. (course then we read magazines) Seriously, not many people understand that while we are chatting and serving you we are multitasking by listening to aircraft noises both outside and inside as well as listening to passenger noises, looking around and smelling. Is anything off or out of the ordinary. On top of this we scan the PAX for key people. Who would we ask to help us? Oh ya, since 9-11 we look at shoes, profile PAX (not just religous), anyone nervous, intoxicated etc. And that irritating chant of "put your bags under your seat"..."large in overhead etc... is part of that emergency plan so you can get out of an A/C alive.

Anyway, my interest is if those commands or checking doors for heat are different at West.

Sorry for lazy spelling. :)

East and West are almost completely on separate programs at this point in the game. Commands are not the same. Procedures are not the same. West does not have a DVD/CD Rom and workbook. West simply has Computer Based training that must be completed ever quarter and its on-line training, no workbook. FA's use their Inflight Operations Manual to reference information. Sure you may find some similarities in procedure/policies, but not much is set in stone to mirror one or the other.

OK it came yesterday with a letter from the director of Inflight training and systems.
Beginning May 06 east will get a cd as part of your training since our counterparts utilize computer based training to supplement recurrent training. Its a powerpoint/with workbook. They are working on getting all training as west does through theHub until then its the cd.
This letter is dated April 19 and apparently came from the cbs(easts communication broadcast system.
In addition the first of 5 partial manual revisions was included to begin the transition. The west carries a Inflight operations Manual IOM which is part of the on going integration. Goal is identical manuels by integration date mid-07.
FYI: use caution in giving out to much sensitive information regarding FAEM in this arena.
Thanks to all of you for calming my nerves oveer this. I'll let you know how it goes.
Side bar: Westies are you getting manual revisions also?

What do you mean?
We get a big quarterly revision every 3 months. Buts thats been standard for the 18yrs I've been here.
Plus, we get lots of blue "bulletins" which cover any policy changes and are usually included and removed when the quarterly comes out.
I have not thoroughly read the revision I just put in, but I promise, I will read it on the way to Newark on Monday.

I figger they will gradually align the policies thru revisions, narrowing the gap until its time to integrate completely.
A monumental task, really.
