According to last week's AW&ST, EADS (Airbus) is settingup a network of maintenance, repair and overhaul shops which will be technically certified and supported by Airbus. This looks just like what U and probably many other airlines are looking for; reliable maintnenace without the investment, the liability, or the hassle.

In-house heavy is looking like an endangered species.

They all ready have one and has have had it for several years, it is EADS Aeroframe Services located in Lake Charles, LA

Opened in October 2000
Centrally located in Lake Charles, Louisiana USA at Chennault International Airport (CWF) which has over 10,700 feet of runway
Customers and immigration for aircraft landing from abroad
Gated facility with 24 hour roving guard
24/7/365 operation
4 multiple bay hangars-over 400,000 square feet - can accommodate 8 wide body aircraft or 12 narrow body aircraft
24,000 sq. ft. mezzanine
Expansion plan to include additional hangar space, warehouse space, backshops and administration building

Their new "network" sounds as if it will be international with Airbus providing technical assistance but not owning any of the shops.

GE tried to get 'U' to be one of their factory authorized repair shops for a few years back. 'U" said no. Gee, go figure.
