I know this has been discussed time and again on this forum, but I heard that at NWA’s twice-yearly Managers’ meetings the topic of a replacement for the DC-10-30s and remaining 747-200s was brought-up again. Evidently, they were told that a decision could be made by early next year. Anyone have any “juicyâ€￾ rumors?

I have been told by a Northwest Engineer that Northwest will be the American 7e7 launch customer, an order for the 7e7 most likely will come prior to the end of the year. NWA, along with a few other carriers asked Boeing to extend the range to 8500 nm and it appears that will happen. Northwest has purchased some 400's (former) Ual, two to become Cargo, two to be config. for NWA pax ser.

NWA purchased four UAL 747-400s? Have not heard that one. Is that the official company word or a rumor. Would be most excellent if true.

The replacements for the 742 & Dc-10's could be the same airplane but one has already been partially replaced, the Dc-10's by the A330's, and the real replacement here is the 742. The A330 has already replaced the Dc-10 in Asia, where neither plane should have been operated, but that's another conversation. A 250-350 passenger very long range airplane is what is needed here, if that is 7E7's that's great, but I would also consider 10 year plan in which 744 are also going to be replacd. 777-200LR's or 777-300ER's should be considered too since a 400 passenger plane will also be needed.

JFK777

Beats me why the B777 doesn't seem to be in the running for NWA's future aircraft orders. You brought up a good point,"buy the 777's and NWA could be set up for serving Asia for the long term as the -400s retire. Maybe the 777 is in the running, but it just seems the talk lately has been the B7E7 or the A350.

Fellas, ladies, I only know that when Northwest has finished it's evaluation of said aircraft , you can take it to the bank that it has been nothing less than technically thorough. Northwest is about efficiency and making money. It could very well be a combo of aircraft such as the 7e7/777/more 330's. The 400's will be with us for awhile. It is a fantastic airplane that makes money for us on the proper route. On another note the Inter-port traffic @ Tokyo has shot thru the roof.

I would love to see the 777 in NWA colors. However, if history is any guide, the 747-400s will be in the fleet for a long, long time. In addition, I believe Northwest thinks an airplane in the A350/7E7 category is the “right sizeâ€￾ for DTW-Asia nonstops, so we probably will not see any orders for 777s there, either (although the -400s will be used on these routes until the new type enters the fleet).

The 7E7 is an 8500 mile airplane, the A330-200 is a 6000 mile plane, the A350 about 7500. What is so extraordinary about an A350 flying to Asia? If N takes the Airbus route, not a bad one to take, it should have 4 engines. A340-500/600. A350 are not for NW in Asia, if it could fly from Dtw to Bangkok then maybe, but that plane hasn't been made by Airbus with 2 engines yet. A340-500 of course could make, Thai Air is operating it from Jfk to Bangkok sometime next year.

I guess the 2 400's belonging to Ual ( they were originally made for NWA) will cost too much to bring them up to specs. They have been turn down. Dec. will be an interesting month for Red. You can bet that Big Red is driving a hard deal with Boeing, with Airbus touting the A350.

NWA said last week that they will announce their decision on whether they are going with the B7E7 or the A350 before the end of December. Hoping they choose the Boeing.

bigsky,

Its hard to say which way they will go but I have a hunch Boeing is going to do everything in their power to put this one together. My bet is the 7E7. In fact I'm confident enough about that guess that I'll wager you a cold one at the Snow Creek.
