As far as those small communities are concerned, does anyone know just how many there are where we provide the only service? Every other market has an alternitive.

Only if they are money-losing cities in the first place. And if they are, then US should have pulled out long ago. The company isn't a charity, and even if it were it cannot afford to continue to be one.
I wasn't suggesting any airline charity. If the cities don't make money, then I would agree that the service is not warranted.

My main point is that the previous poster suggested that US's demise would be a "non event". Losing air service--particularly in those cities only served by US--is hardly a non event. And that's the situation in my community.

Well, if the cities do make money, you can bet someone will add service to those cities as quickly as fleet, crew, and scheduling logistics allow.

Jim,

I don't know about the routes systemwide...but in North Carolina, 3 of 8 airports are served only by US.

mweiss,

Eventually, the money-making markets would certainly get service. But if you look at the situation with the regional airlines today, it will take some time before resources are available. Once a community loses all service and pax seek service at other airports, it is extremely difficult to re-build the market. The other issue with this is the Essential Air Service Program. Even though a community might be designated for EAS, the funds are not available to support the program at every community so-designated.

Will US Airways become a virgin? Maybe like Madonna. We've already slept with the whole neighborhood, from management to union leadership, to politicians and so on. Then, the leaders of the MIA IAM and management slapped us up silly and tossed us out on the alley when they were done pulling their trick.

The reqeium sounds for the airline.
