Bermuda Situation

Anybody know what the situation with BDA currently us? That hurricane that rumbled over Bermuda knocked out the single causeway between the mainland and the airport. Is service even being offered to BDA at this point?

Flights are being cancelled the day before departure. I checked on several other carriers and I noticed that AA had canx their JFK flights thru about the 11th or 12th already. DL was still showing operating in the system for today, but had canx the flights yesterday. They may be doing the day before thing as well. With 60% of the island still without power, I wouldnt imagine that the BDA government would be thrilled to have planeloads of tourists landing for a while.

I don't even think that the issue is power, but access to the airport. We do still have quite a few customers stranded in BDA that I am sure would love to get home.

Nothing like a hurricane-induced extended stay.

While we're on hurricanes, what does US Airways or other airlines do when their transatlantic flights are running into possible hurricanes or extra-tropical hurricanes?

Looking at the NHC's website, it appears that the hurricane that did a tapdance on Bermuda (Fabian) is going to hang around south of Greenland for a while and then double back. Given that many Transatlantic flights do go that far north, do the airlines reroute, load extra fuel, unload cargo, or cancel entire flights???

Part of the problem is US Customs in BDA will probably not be in operation when service begins, therefor no "Preclearing". So US could operate to PHL or CLT but not DCA/LGA till this is resolved. The LGA service is now cancelled for several days with the first possible eastbound on Thursday and westbound on Friday, as this aircraft now RONS in BDA. One of the hotels many of my friends stay at (The Sonesta) is not rumored to reopen until May due to storm damage.

 Those of us on the beach scope out the NHC every 6 hours. Just restocked our plywood that we lost in Floyd. Kayaks and surfboards are staying out for some great waves! Check back on Tuesday.

I've always been fascinated by severe weather. Currently Isabel is a Category 5, the strongest on the scale, 350 miles across, sustained winds at 160. Not a good omen for the east coast.

Only 3 Category 5's have hit the US in the last 100 years, with the most recent being Andrew in 1992. It's way too early to predict a landfall site but this has the potential to be a huge history-making mess. If your area gets an evacuation notice, LEAVE! I had relatives in Andrew that did not, their home was demolished around them, they were very lucky to survive.

Very sage advice. We have our "Go" lists and reservations lined up well inland if we decide to bug out. From decision time to off the island, including getting everything stowed, boarded-up and new video catalogue for insurance purposes is under 4 hours. We always try to beat the traffic too.

My wife is flying to YUL on Thursday. Guess it might take me a little longer this time.

If Isabel hits anywhere on the East coast I can already see Septembers reason for our losses. "System impacted by hurricanes Fabian and Isabel..."
