Winnipeg airline mechanics being 'bumped' by Vancouver workers

The union says Air Canada Technical Services is looking to outsource some heavy aircraft maintenance work to El Salvador, where it recently purchased 80 per cent of a 1,000-employee facility.

Jet repair unit stake being sold

So, they buy a ‘facility’ in El Salvador, lay off 650 Mechanics and sell their operation in Canada.

Seems our Northern Cousins are learning much from Corporate America.

No it's not just a US issue. Inspite of unemplyoment in parts of eastern Germany close to 20% Lufthansa Teknics has operations in the far east. It happens in non-avitaion as well. Both BMW and Mercedes have production lines here in the US.

Seems to me it would have been well worth it to invest in foreign countries to help build up their economies and increase their standard of living. Then they would not be encouraged to come to the US for jobs or for US companies to sell out US workers for cheaper labor.

Then again, that may have required labor and management to work together. Play ball……

You guys are making a big deal out of nothing, soon we will have an amsesty bill that will make it possible for all those outsourced jobs to be brought home for cheaper labor. :p

Seems we've been doing that quite some time now Gar!
Subsidizing mexico has been the norm for years.

Then they would not be encouraged to come to the US for jobs or for US companies to sell out US workers for cheaper labor.

Sure they would, they get all free the perks without penalty and send the greenbacks home to take care of the extended family While building up a nice nest egg to retire on south of the border. Iv'e seen it with my own two eye's, heck Im tempted to sell the permafrost in fairbanks and head south myself!

Then again, that may have required labor and management to work together. Play ball……

So you are saying its only "Labor" thats being outsourced?

Giving subsidies and actually helping a country build it's self up are entirely separate issues. As far as I am aware, we have never actually done the later, just the former.

subsidize
subsidise
verb subsidized, subsidizing

1. To provide or support with a subsidy.

Thesaurus: finance, fund, sponsor, underwrite, promote, support.

Well what else exactly did you have in mind besides the above mentioned?
overthrowing the corrupt Mexican government and imposing our standards?

JAL has been doing US heavies for a long long time if I remember correctly.Like 20 or more years.

Unions should see this for what its worth.....prime pickings for global union membership at these cheap labor locations....bring the wages up globally then there goes the incentive to outsource.....
Unionize in china though....I bet it comes with a casket.

Want More Engineers? Provide Jobs for Them

Excerpt:
However, the declining number of students enrolled in technical programs has nothing to do with the quality of our schools or the natural talents and interests of our students. It has everything to do with the massive loss of domestic technology jobs to outsourcing, offshoring and the importation of foreign technology workers through the H1-B visa program. It has everything to do with vanishing opportunities, declining compensation and decreasing job security.

Can bright, motivated students be blamed for shying away from fields with such bleak futures? Can parents, teachers and counselors be blamed for guiding young Americans into more promising careers? The bottom line is that when executives like Bill Gates complain that the U.S. isn't producing enough scientists and engineers, what they really mean is that the U.S. isn't producing enough scientists and engineers happy to work for $7 per hour.

Bill Gates KMA
