After three years, the economy has finally found solid footing as 2004 heads into its second month. Several signs of tenuous improvement were evident in the spring of 2003 and continued to congeal throughout the second half of the year. Consumer confidence returned, as a sense of normalcy settled and the parade of shocks that began on 9/11/01 finally subsided. The stock market, which had been stuck in neutral for over a year, finally took off; the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed from below 7500 in February to over 10,500 this month.
