I heard throught the grapevine that Shuttl America and Air Midwest turbo propls were going to close down, as Midatlantic and PSA were going to take there routes>

any truth, or similar plan heard of? Whta is the future for these airlines and employee??

Air Midwest and Shuttle America might be going bye bye but I doubt that PSA is taking there routes, at least in the long term. They are going all RJ and I just can't see an RJ going CLT AHN or CLT HTS. I guess with this group you never know though. -Cape

I'd be surprised to see Air Midwest go since they are part of evil Mesa, unless U is pulling out of EAS, 19 seat markets. Shuttle America will be used as a stopgap on certain routes out of PIT until more RJs arrive. MidAtlantic will have larger planes so I dont see them taking over Air Midwest or Shuttle Americas routes- it'll probably be PSA. Didnt Dave say there would be some "rationalization" of Express carriers? When is he going to get rid of some of them?

not so sure that Air-Midwest will ever go away and Shuttle America may go away because Wexford group doesn't want to deal with turbo-props anymore. The bigger problem facing all the express carriers now is the increased passenger weights that the FAA has imposed. I suspect that Ashby's statement that the turbo-props will be here well after 2008 is only a myth

I understand the ERJs are having weight restriction problems on the longer runs also.

That is correct. Both of the ERJ operators that serve our station going to PIT & CLT leave 15-20 bags behind with a full flight. Another benefit for our passengers to see us pull away from the A/C with their bags.

US did that to me once on an ERJ. And, since the bags did not make it until the next day (and 2-3 express flights later), US bought me a $600 suit on a $380 ticket. Made lots of sense.

$600 suit! I hope it wasn't navy blue with a tie tab!!!!
The delayed suit was decent (Brooks Brothers). The purchased suit was Men's Warehouse generic. I did not think it was prudent (nor did I really think I'd ever see the money) for Armani. I also did not think it fair to try to get more from US than I absolutely needed to get thru the meeting in question.

The point being, of course, that it was a net loss for US. What I really found amusing about that particular flight is that 3 CPs were left sans bags. I guess those priority tag thingys are not worth the paper they come printed on--or don't mean anything on craft without seperate luggage bins. I don't know.

With the new weight restrictions being imposed they should give the passenger the option of taking another flight or being placed on another carrier with a bigger plane. All these RJ's and props out of PIT are driving me to the other airlines lately. I am tired of my bags being left behind and delievered to me at a much later time. I want my luggage when I get off the plane or I don't want to go. Plain and simple. If you leave my bag behind, leave me behind.

Or better yet. How about bringing some of those planes out of the desert again? I found it interesting the loads for US have dropped 28% while the other carriers have each increased by 11%. Seems that the customers are saying we don't like the smaller planes.

(the load factor % was reported on the local news recently too)

ERJ performance can be easily fixed. Mesa has looked at upgrading the A3007 model engines to the "C" variant which would give it an extra 500-1000 lbs of thrust in TO-1 setting. It is a simple software upgrade to the FADEC's. Cost about $10,000 per plane, or so I've been told.

Money well spent.

I believe COEX runs this upgraded engine, but I'm not certain.

There are still problems on the Bahamas flights. AirMidwest got approval to fly to Marsh Harbor from PBI, but not the segment to Treasure Cay and back to PBI. As a result they are BUSING people from Marsh Harbor to Treasure Cay. Weight is also an issue. Most days the flight is full and bags are left behind. Although Bahamas Air goes to the islands from PBI, they don't go daily, and even their Dash 8's cannot accomodate the extra luggage leftover.

The same situation holds true for the daily MIA-North Eleuthra-Governor's Harbor-MIA flight. They still do not have approval to do the ELH-GHB-MIA sector, so they just do MIA-ELH-MIA.
