US Airways Appoints Eastern Division Vice President

Friday December 2, 8:00 am ET

TEMPE, Ariz., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways Group, Inc., (NYSE: LCC - News), today announced that Ross Bonanno has been named vice president, airport operations - eastern division, effective Dec. 19, 2005. In this position, Bonanno, 51, will be responsible for customer service and station operations in the airline's Eastern region, which includes the Philadelphia and Charlotte hubs, Pittsburgh, and nearly 40 additional US Airways cities. He will report to Senior Vice President, Customer Service Anthony Mule.

Another VP!!!!

Congrats to Ross. Maybe a new view can improve the way the current management has treated the employees.

You folks at USAirways have my sympathy. I work for AA on the ramp and I was at DFW when AA promoted him to run DFW. He came in with his new system and totally screwed up the operation. We told them that his new system would not work. As usual, our advice was not heeded and thousands of bags missed on a daily basis. His new plan changed the way we connected the bags to online flights. There were three zone drivers on each gate that delivered the connecting bags to the other flights. Each driver had about 15 to 20 gates in his zone. The quickest way to deliver all the bags was to start at one end of the zone and work your way to the other end (only when we had a real tight connection would we go directly to that gate first). Under his system, he mandated that we deliver according to the departure time of the outbound flight. So instead of delivering bags starting at gate 1 then gate 2, 3, 4, all the way to 20; we would have to deliver to gate 20 then gate 10 then gate 1 then gate 7, well you get the idea. It took much longer this way and when aircraft were arriving and departing the gates we had to stop thus making a bad situation even worse. I pointed out a mountain of missed bags to a new supervisor as proof that Bonano's sytem doesn't work. To this day, I can still remember him acting like a high school cheerleader saying "it'll work! it'll work!". Needless to say, Ross Bonano did not last very long at DFW.

Instead of focusing on yet another VP why not focus on the fact that new and different folks are being assigned to operations in the East?

One of the way merged companies break up the "kingdoms" that folks create is to "Infiltrate" them with their own people which most often dissolves the the cliques power base and makes the operation run more smoothly because then managers actually have to manage.

If a move like this breaks up the old boy network that many of you speak of then whatever they are paying this guy is a bargain. Hell they can pay for the guy in lower grievence costs alone if he can boost morale.

I can and do understand the frustration of yet another VP contrasted to the uncertainty surrounding various workgroups and pay scales.

This might be a very GOOD thing for the workers

You're right it may be a good thing...if Bonnano is given the power to change things and not micromanaged by the higher ups. Remember he reports to Mule who reports to Crellin. My last count is US Airways has 31 VPs now.
3 executive VPs, 9 senior VPs and 19 VPs. as a reference...United has 36. Doug ! I think we have enough now... let's get this airline movin'.

Don't need a VP, need managers who can direct the work to get done and more of a front-line operation. VPs muck everything up. Went from 23 3 months ago to 31, INSANITY REINS AGAIN! More VPs now than the old U, like 3 more. That's probably another $600,000 in salary alone not counting more bonus money for these yahoos.

Isn't it time you stopped spreading your "joy" here? "INSANITY REINS AGAIN" only in your mind. Haven't you quit yet?

You do realize you have 12,000 more employees and 140 more AC? 3 VPs for 1/3 the work force and fleet doesn't seem excesive?

Only the most ignorant of the working class of this company would wish for Pit Bull to be gone.

Either you are management or you are part of the working class management hopes to take advantage of.

Dog Wonder,

Thank you! I hope Pitbull keeps posting here with her thoughts and observations. If folks don't like to read her postings, US Aviation has a handy-dandy device, quite easy to use, called "Ignore".

Nope. STill on aviation.

Thanks Bob. And you are right on in your entire post. It all about "balance".

Every organization needs its PITbulls
Balance...balance this: I ran into a ex co-worker at Wal* Mart this evening who is a mechanic and has 25 years in. I make more than he does working non union with WAY better benefits. He works in the building that Timco is taking over, you know the company that Mr. Fried Burger praised, the IAM big wig.

On another note, I received a letter in the mail today from AMFA with some very good facts about the IAM....seems the "balance" is no longer favoring that so-called union...balance...good old balance, what union dues are wasted on, upside down balance in the company's favor with the IAM doing nothing except collecting your dues for NO returns. Balance, Imbalance is more like it.

Cab,

You know I care about you. Move on, my friend! Anyone who works for WalMart is seriously screwed up. Enough said.

Enjoy your life and move on!

I never cease to be amazed at the impulse to squash whatever is different from ourselves. Diversity is nature's survival tool - when one species or theory dies out, there are others around to go forward.

Moreover, no one has a lock on all of the facts, and precious few facts endure over time - change happens.

The PitBulls of the world keep the status quo accountable. And when this economic system comes up short (and they all do, sooner or later), the status quo will be shocked into a standstill. The Pitbulls will be there to pick up the pieces and fix it.

Consider recent history. When the Depression revealed the shortcomings of laissez faire, the Hoover's of the world were incapable of responding - they kept trying the same old solutions. It took new people not married to the status quo to get things going again.

Driving Pitbull away will boomerang on U. She was constrained so long as she was an employee. She is now free to act on a larger stage, and I'd bet large she and U will meet again. Except now, they can't step on her chain!

I think we need to just give one of the political parties to Dio to totally renovate! We could make it a reality tv show. I'd vote for him!

IT IS SO TRUE that both parties are HOPELESSLY mired in past, failing ideas and relationships (I think including labor).

I'm not smart enough to know what to do, but I do know that wrenching change is necessary. I MEAN SERIOUSLY, we had a new threat of international, ideologically based terrorism and we have a political party that needed to create the dynamics of WWII/Cold War in order to have a strategy.

I'd also add some of the debate around same-sex marriage and certain elements of the choice movement and old line labor as areas that need NEW thinking.

I would hope to see new ideas to go along with Xidas's new career status and obvious energy and commitment. Wouldn't it be cool if we were to see her as part of a broader movement?
