Americans New Web Site For China

And the long awaited ORD-HKG? Note HKG has open skies on 3/4th freedom with USA, so is nothing stopping it (apart from economics and crew hours?)

100% a/c economics. We do not have a plane large enough to male it viable. From what I read from AA, where they specifically addressed ORD-HKG. They would need a 777-3 or a different 3 class configuration on the 200. They simply will not do a sub class fleet or configuration for a single market.

Interesting. So it sounds like AA's thinking about HKG is that it needs to pack in more of the cheap excursion passengers rather than just a bunch of F and J pax, (which is its MO on all other international routes)? I would have thought that HKG would have enough high-yielding traffic to operate much like NRT or LHR. But I'm often mistaken.

Too bad AA and NW couldn't agree on price for the proposed merger/takeover in 2000. Plenty of Asian routes and plenty of 747s to fly them. Ahh, what could have been.

There's two things AA (and CO/DL/HA) are applying for --

1) Authorization (designation) to fly between the US and China
2) Frequencies to serve China

Exactly. I assume that AA applied for the 2004 frequencies several months ago

AA wasn't authorized to serve China in 2004, therefore couldn't apply for the available frequencies.

Any ideas why AA didn't apply in the alternative like CO did?

AA's application is for the 2005 designation, but states that we are interested in the 2006 designation if not selected in 2005. Some carriers (i.e. Hawaiian and DL) specifically requested the 2006 designation because they're not in a position to serve it during 2005.

Now I'm confused. AA has applied for the 2005 designation and seven frequencies to PVG.

But today's CO press release talks about CO's application to fly both PVG and PKG:

If approved, service between New York/Newark and Beijing will begin in March 2005, with Shanghai service beginning in March 2006. Each flight will be linked to dozens of communities via Continental's Global Gateway hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, the only major-airline international hub serving the New York area. In all, Continental anticipates its proposed Beijing and Shanghai services will provide for more public benefits than proposals for new service at Chicago, Atlanta, Honolulu, Oakland and San Francisco.

Yet AA only applied for PVG. Why wouldn't AA want to fly both, as CO clearly does?

Or am I missing something?
