American Airlines becomes #1 carrier
As a result of the merger that has taken place between American Airlines and US Airways, the combined operation has resulted in American becoming the number one airline to operate between the US and Mexico, with it reporting a seat capacity increase of 32%. However, the airline is not the fastest growing in the market, a title that is awarded to Southwest Airlines. With Southwest having acquired AirTran Airways, the LCC is reporting an increase in seat capacity of 339% when compared to the corresponding period last year. If we take the carriers that have been merged and acquired out of the mix though the fastest growing carrier is VivaAerobus, which has grown seat availability between Mexico and the US by 219%, a result of the airline launching services on six new city pairs between the two countries in the past 12 months according to OAG Schedules Analyser data...

Really more like AA "returns" to position as #1 carrier U.S.-Mexico.  Historically AA was larger in seats - if not also flights - compared to Continental.  United overtook AA with its merger, but indeed, now with AA's merger it now once again is the largest single airline U.S.-Mexico.

nothing changed as a result of the AA merger.

since you brought up DL, the order will change if DL and AM get their JV which they apparently are continuing to pursue. The mechanics of what will take place are not publicly known and haven't been released.

there has to be something wrong with the author and their inability to do analysis to have AA at #1 spot

I can assure you that NYC is a far larger market than the US-Mexico and AA not only is much further behind in the local market than DL and UA, is moving in the WRONG direction, and has no JV partners to help it out in the markets where AA is slipping the most.

Looking to shore up their JV?
well technically there is no AM-DL JV but it is certainly coming one way or another.

and, again, DL was NEVER larger than AA or UA in the US-Mexico market so those who are fixated over size might ask themselves how DL has EVEN POSSIBLY managed to remain in the market.

and they might also ask what AA and UA's next step will be in Latin America - not just Mexico - when JVs start popping up and AA can't get approved for them without major concessions because they are so much larger than their competitors.
