Airline sacrifices goats to appease sky god
Tue Sep 4, 2007 3:41PM EDT

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Officials at Nepal's state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday.

Nepal Airlines, which has two Boeing aircraft, has had to suspend some services in recent weeks due the problem.

The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome aircraft Sunday at Nepal's only international airport in Kathmandu in accordance with Hindu traditions, an official said.

"The snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights," said Raju K.C., a senior airline official, without explaining what the problem had been.

Local media last week blamed the company's woes on an electrical fault. The carrier runs international flights to five cities in Asia.

It is common in Nepal to sacrifice animals like goats and buffaloes to appease different Hindu deities.

I wonder if any US-based airlines will begin this practice in order to keep their SCAB-maintained fleet airworthy...

I graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics in 1985 and actually had trouble performing the FAA required practical of

sacrificing a goat on the tarmac.I believe if you check in the 757 flight manual, there is a description of the procedure for crew

to comply if needed.

I was on a Delta MD80 and our seats were near the engine intakes. The guy beside me said he'd love to have the job of throwing the chickens into the engines to test for bird strikes.

Actually...they used a small cannon to achieve the velocity during flight.....frozen chickens by the way...then somebody like

PETA pitched a ####.....used to get 'air grilled chicken'....but it went the way of the Edsel....

I hear the may open a MRO facility partnered with UAL Services... :p

Snopes seems to indicate that the birds are not frozen when fired. Why fire a frozen bird when what ever animal a bird hits during flight will not be frozen.

Gar, could you do me a favor?

Call Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics...ask for Gary Hoyle....director, and please tell them they taught me wrong about the frozen chicken thing.

Baack buck buck

Dell,

The myth buster segment only proved that a frozen object is more damaging than a non-frozen object. No Sh!t. Really? It does not mention anything about using frozen birds to test anything.

I not know anything about aeronautics so if someone can explain to me why you would use a frozen bird I am all ears but I don't think there are a lot of frozen birds flying around. I would think if someone wants to test for hail, you would use frozen water pellets as they will better match the weight and density of hail.

You have never had an instructor who was wrong about something? I just pointed out a fairly well regarded source that says it did not happen.

OK...and I told you that was what I was told then....he was the one who started the rumor.......

You never encountered frozen chickens at FL 350?

Dell,

Does it make any sense to shoot a frozen bird at an aircraft part? When Discovery had the special on the building of the 777, the showed a bird being shot at the engine. It looked thawed to me.
