Senate Democrats Protect Workers from Bush’s Attack on Overtime Pay Protections
Jan. 20—The U.S. Senate today voted to protect workers from President George W. Bush’s attack on overtime pay protections. By a 45–to–48 vote, the Senate defeated a White House–backed attempt to end a filibuster against an omnibus spending bill because it did not contain an overtime pay guarantee. The vote fell 12 short of the 60 needed to end a filibuster.
“It is inconceivable that this administration is doing everything it can to cut workers’ overtime pay in a time when good jobs are scarce, unemployment is high and working families are struggling to pay the bills,†says AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney.
Last year, Bush’s Department of Labor proposed changes in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) that could cost 8 million workers their overtime pay protections under the FLSA.
