Mergers and pricing power:

Most importantly, these trends seem likely to continue in the immediate future.

It is likely that US Airways will launch a takeover bid at some point; if successful, this additional consolidation would further support capacity restraint and industry profitability. US Airways itself would be the biggest beneficiary here, since it is currently at a disadvantage as the smallest network carrier.

Good luck, I've been stuck in that mode for months and can't get an answer from anyone. If you get an answer or figure it out would you let me know please?

Are you getting a commission from the author? You do know that Seeking Alpha contributors are paid by the number of people who click on their article--not by the content?

It was overcapacity that undermined the industry's pricing power in the three decades after deregulation, and overcapacity was a symptom of having too many small network carriers. Larger carriers (due to their scale) can more easily reduce capacity while still offering their customers sufficient travel options to keep their business.

..... and this was orchestrated via government over-site. Basically forced on the industry ... so when you try figuring out who caused you to lose your defined retirement plan and 25% of you pay check, look no further.

Do you have Iphone or Droid? I have Droid and have a full version option at the bottom. When I accidentally hit this one time I hit the delete cookies option and when I went back to the site was back in mobile mode. Any of that help?

Thanks tadjr ... I think I fixed it.

Be careful registering with another name; there may be a script in place that bans your IP or something.

I see a mobile mode drop down option at the bottom of the page, but it doesn't go anywhere for me. I'm using Firefox with AdBlock Plus. On my smaller laptop a few weeks ago I noticed AdBlock was also stripping all kinds of graphics for some reason.

Maybe I can get a Mods attention by calling someone a coke-slinging douchebag in the AFA thread.

American was the last of the so-called legacy carriers, created before the industry was deregulated in 1978, not to have filed for bankruptcy. If it manages to reduce its costs under court protection, analysts say it could become a candidate for a merger or a takeover. The most likely partner is US Airways, whose chief executive, Doug Parker, has long advocated the need for consolidation in the industry.

Ray Neidl, an analyst at the Maxim Group, said that US Airways would increase American’s network in the Southwest and in the Southeast, although it would not add much by way of international destinations. A merger with US Airways, Mr. Neidl said, “would also bring a very powerful and aggressive management team into play, which American would need to regain its proper place in the industry.”
