American Airlines Applies for Additional Brazil Frequencies

Sees Opportunity to Expedite New Entry on the Dallas/Ft. Worth-Rio de Janeiro Route

American Airlines has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the right to use three weekly regional Brazil frequencies that Delta Air Lines is relinquishing as of Sept. 7, 2010.

"If we are granted the use of these soon-to-be-relinquished frequencies then we could begin flying nonstop between Miami and Brasilia on Nov. 18, 2010, as scheduled, and between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Rio de Janiero (GIG)

full story here

In reality it appears that AA and DL are swapping slot types around so that DL can transfer 3 weekly of its ATL-GIG frequenices which can be used to serve GRU in order to bring DTW-GRU up to 5X/week (the other 2 came from LAX-GRU) while AA is taking 3 of the slots which DL is giving up that were previously used to serve ATL-FOR (which is being discontinued)... etc.

Bottom line is that it appears that AA will be able to add DFW-GIG as it had planned to do on top of JFK-GIG plus start MIA-BSB while DL will essentially be adding DTW-GRU as a 5X/week new route and a 3rd gateway for DL to Brazil.... all in all if it all works out both AA and DL will be significantly expanding their Brazil operations and revenue generating potential while moving around slots to meet the restrictions that Brazil places on how slots can be used by US carriers.

As British Airlines frees up more of our 777s by taking more LHR action from us, AMR will be applying for more frequencies to South America, and upgrading services from 757 on Trans- Atlantiic flights.

I haven't seen any indication AA or BA planning any reduction of service between the US and UK. Although AA has consistently continued to build its service to Brazil.

The seat numbers will still be the same to LHR, except the seats will be on BA aircraft. AMR still gets a cut ( commission )and with Jet Blue pickiing up more domestic traffic, more options for the stong British pound to find it's way here.

... are these "commissions" enough to get Arpey, Horton, and the rest bonuses without flying an aircraft?

Even though the economy is still up and down, travel numbers are are heading up.

AA.com is the best known airline.com.

The MAD ( Madison Ave ) men plaster the AA.com logo everywhere.

AMR makes money on any AA.com booking whether the flying is on AA or any one of our One World Partners.

When you subtract the cost of fuel, labor etc from an AAonly ticket, there's little to show as profit.

The bottom line is AA.com makes millions in profit more when the ticket is One World, than AAonly.
