I heard an unconfirmed rumour today in LAS that WN is purchasing 21 737-800's and 9 of them are coming from ATA. Can anybody confirm?...

Key word here...........rumour.

There are other airlines vieing for ATA's assets, and the judge will have to deceide who gets them.

The problem w/800's is that they don't have the same legs as the -700.

According to Boeing, max range on the -700 is 3,752 statute miles. The -800 is 3,383 statute miles, about 400 less.

It's my understanding that ATA had a hard time getting the -800 off the ground, full, at Midway.

They'd also require a fourth flight attendant, a small but problematic addition to Southwest's simple model.

We will all certainly see if this rumor pans out.

There are alot of markets on WN's network other than MDW where the -800 makes a lot of sense, including Florida, LAS, and PHL where runways are not an issue. The 737-800 has full transcon range.

I doubt WN would buy those ATA planes as they want all cockpits to be the same and I think the cockpits on WN use glass, but have the glass reproduce the analog set so it matched the 200's. ATA has glass digital cockpits, like most other operators, I suspect. And while there are markets it would make sense, having that many extra seats would be alot of spare capacity to carry around when you don't need it, too! So unless the bk jucge would let them go at a great price, I would be quite surprised. Given there is pretty good demand for 800's, they'll likely go elsewhere for more money.

Reconfiguration of the Glass/Round Dial configuration on WN vs the Traditional EFIS presentation on the ATA aircraft is a matter of programming pins.. Not an issue.. Display optoins are customer choice.
