I think it's a win-win for WN. If TZ stays in business, it gives WN an entry into airports that it wouldn't otherwise serve, like LGA and DFW. WN also ensured that they will have a weak competitor in MDW. If TZ folds, then WN will have a chance to pick up more of TZ's gates at MDW and enhance their position further. It was a shrewd move by WN since they come out ahead either way.

It looks like an even better move now. ATA announced that in Feb they will be closing their stations in PIT, PHL, & MIA. Also in Feb they will stop flying from MDW to FLL, LAX, MCO, PHX, & SEA. The move by SWA stopped AirTran from expanding at MDW & removed ATA as a competitor

Yeah, and I am sure these moves are in no way related to WN's service (or planned service) to those airports (areas in the case of MIA)...

But I do agree with ngneer... WN will come out ahead no matter what happens from here...

No, I'm not quoting anyone except myself. Did Business Week say something similar? If so, it's purely coincidental.

There is new service on ATA between LAS-HNL and the increased frequency in 4 markets out of MDW, so the codeshare should bring lots of new customers to both airlines. Just my thoughts............

I thought that the codeshare was limited both in scope and time. Is it now a blanket codeshare where SW can sell seats on any ATA route?

I have not seen this announcement, but thought something like this might be possible... Can you state your source? I did not see anything about this on the ata website.

I know the LAS service is happening, but it's not mentioned in an article I found on the Excite.com stock watch site, detailing the MDW changes:

It looks like the ATA codeshare is a real boon to SWA.

From USA today:

Southwest profits handsomely from ATA deal: Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said his airline's codesharing alliance with ATA will generate at least $100 million in annual revenue for the discount giant. That's at least double the $25 million to $50 million estimate Southwest gave when it first inked the deal with ATA, Reuters reports.
