What goes where?

Why do some destinations seem to be Boeing oriented and others Airbus? Is that a deliberate decision (perhaps having to do with spare parts, and mechanic training?) or just coincidence?

Are gates at the Hubs arranged to cluster aircraft by type as well? Or is that a coincidence?

The answer to your first question is yes, many of the smaller stations have one or the other to better utilize the spare parts inventory. As far as hub parking I no the philosophy in CLT was to try and keep the different aircraft types parked together due to flight crews. Many crew swaps occur in a hub and if the crew bringing in flt xxx to gate C17 lands 20 mins late then their departing flight xxx on gate B16 will probably take a delay. If the gates are close together it might make schedule. This was even more effective when there were so many fleet types.

That used to be the case. The Aibuses would almost always use the B Concourse in CLT, but someone obviously found that the crews were be inconvenienced enough with that procedure. Now it''s almost a given that switching airplanes in CLT will entail a concourse change.

PHL and PIT, with their cool northern efficiency, have never even tried to put similar A/C on the same concourse.

When boarding a flight in CLT, please note that there is a placard that says "Airbus compatible jetway". Not all jetways are equipped to handle the ground power requirements of the Airbus. All of B can accomodate an Airbus and a few gates on C. Another reason may be the space restrictions. The same reason you rarely if never see a 757 on C.

All the gates in CLT have ground power capable of supporting an airbus, but not all gates can accomodate an airbus because of the wing clearance and type of jetways. All the gates on B can hold one.
