Why is'nt Lisbon Portugal on our map? A MIA-LIS would be an ideal fit. It would link Portugal with Brazil and the rest of South America. While I'm at it, where is MIA-SJC? or MIA-SAN?, MIA-PHX, MIA-SEA? We need that one back.

AA probably has JFK-LIS route authority from TWA. Lisbon is a good layover city too. Now that Tripoli is opening up they could fly there too on old TWA route authorities. See NY Times Sunday article on Roman ruins near Tripoli. No booze in Tripoli though.

Lets just hope when the new Terminals are compleated some of these routes become reality!

If the 757 flying thing takes off, I think MIA-LIS is within the 757s range. Perfect route for it.

MAH4546,

"What is the 757 flying thing"? What would have to happen for AA to fly 757 to Lisbon or other cities in Europe.

Starting in June, American Airlines will begin summer service between Boston and Manchester, UK with a single-class 757-200. There will be only coach service, with the First Class cabin being given to Elites, Platinums, full fare paying Y, etc., etc. If it is popular, we may see AA extend this to other markets in Europe. Out of Boston and New York City, there are endless oppurtunities. Though, out of Miami, you can't really go much farther than a flight to Ireland, Ponta Delgada, or the Canary Islands.

MAH4546,

Why couldn't AA operate "Single-Class" 767 to Europe? Given most if not all 763 have only Business and coach this could work. 767 can fly furthur too, Miami-Lisbon or ORD-Birmmingham, UK(again) would be possible. If AA flies to Honolulu so often with 767, it could find a few spare 767 for this new service to Europe. I just think AA is at the point where do they have enough international aircraft? With 777's flying new routes from LAX and JFK to NRT, expanded flying to recovering Buenos Aires and a full schedule to LHR we seem to be at a ceiling of 777 capacity.

Is AirPortugal still around? TWA used to continue to BCN from LIS, is that correct?

AAquila, Air Portugal (TAP) is still around and yes TWA flt.900 continued on to Barcelona but this was seasonal also had flt.902 JFK-BCN. It was a great
flight to work, the Portugese are good people and the best as passengers.

Correction, flight 902 was our non-stop JFK-BCN and so was the seasonal JFK-LIS-BCN, flight 900 was just JFK-LIS. Sorry, I waited to long when I caught the error and was unable to edit.

At one time-Ithink in the early 80s the routing was JFK-LIS-Malaga,Spain. ;)

Malaga is correct. Many of the beaches were nude beaches, some topless, very few had anyone dressed in swimming garb American would say was appropriate. Great nitelife too. Loads very poor off season. L-1011 pretty empty with only 25 - 50 pax.

I'm not sure a 757 could make the MIA-LIS trip, though it could be close. At TWA we ran the JFK-LIS with a 757 occasionally and it could occasionally be tough getting it back west if there were any headwinds and and any fuel needed for alternates (enroute and dest alternates). It'll be interesting to see what y'all decide to do with the 75's in Europe.
