Southwest Airlines to start Dallas flights to Oakland, San Francisco in January.

Drinks anyone?

which goes to show that WN has capacity to expand at DAL.

I'm sure this won't be the last round of additions.

Yes Sharon, more expansion coming soon.  Looking forward to more good news...

Great to see our first fully optimized schedule milestone!!! I was happy to see DAL-SFO come up on this one
considering that was the only route VX will fly that hadn't been originally announced.

On August 25, we will open the schedule  through April 6.
These dates are subject to change. :)

Cheers everyone!!! :)
it says it is only one flight per day to SFO and OAK. is that correct? were other routes cut by one or is this a net increase of 2 flights?

if WN starts Canada runs   what cities would be the first one they would pick?

This article doesn't say, but IIRC Gary Kelly said a few months ago that Canada only has about 5 cities that would be attractive to WN for service.
I don't believe he mentioned them by name, but you may speculate.

thanks for the link  very interesting WN    If I guess  Id say YVR, YYZ would be 2 top cities   may be YEG YUL and or Edmonton???

This is kinda lame answer for you Robbed, but, the cities that have the higher (average) air fares, with room to add flights, and bring in more passengers are usually the top 3 reasons SWA will look at.  There is room to grow there for sure, this is why they wanted the agreement with WJ for sharing flts, now it may come out that walking away from it may have been a very bad decision, it will get interesting to say the least...

agree there swamt  Im actually rather surprised though WN would walk away from that but who knows may be they will reconsider in the near future???  as for the 3 things u mentioned  thats basically why I mentioned YVR YYZ and YUL for the top 3  but only time will tell bro

Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal are likely the first three each of which have strong leisure traffic flows to the US.

Note also that WestJet at the same is going international.

WestJet at one time was going to partner with WN... now they appear ready to be competitors.

My SWA Guess (no, not Southwest Airlines guess...Scientific Wild-Assed Guess) would include YYC. Calgary is not only a major oil center--the corporate offices, not necessarily the wells--it is the gateway to major ski areas in that part of Canada--particularly, Banff. Nice thing about the ski business is that if you can offer a lower fare, you can do lots of business. The two largest expenses to a ski trip are the transportation to/from and the lift tickets--which have gone into the stratosphere over the past few years. The ski business is also a definite selling point for YVR.
