Also charging to redeem mileage awards makes the program less attractive.I have found AA the best for getting the dates of travel I want.

Don't forget about the inactivity fee. You can now pay a fee to get back miles that expired. Of course the cost of doing so you can just buy another ticket! Reminds me of the UA program. The miles NEVER expired until they went into bankruptcy. I went to redeem some miles and was told I did not have enough. What? I had over 60,000 miles! Turns out they wiped all but the most recent out in their bankruptcy. They would gladly reinstate the now expired never expiring miles for $175.00. Of course in that case it made since to pay the fee for that many miles but they were not suppose to expire to begin with.
