"An announcement of a new timeline for US Airways to merge with America West is considered to be another encouraging sign of emerging from bankruptcy.

A merger between the two airlines comes with tremendous challenges. Many experts originally thought US Airways would not pull out of bankruptcy."

......

"US Airways will file a plan of reorganization by June 30. The company plans on having the bankruptcy judge approve the merger with America West a month later by July 31.

If all goes well, the merger will be complete by Oct. 31."

Is it me, or is a 10/31 completion date a bit quick for such a merger?

The original merger closing date was to be in mid September. An October 31st closing date is much more realistic considering the regulatory hurdles that have to be crossed. It will still take two to three years to fully operationally integrate the two companies.

USAir announced the merger with Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) on December 8,1986. The operational merger date was April 4, 1988.

It has been reported that Mr. Parker is in no rush to make mistakes and plans to take his time in integrating the "new" USAirways.

I agree with your assessment of the latest closing date.
