US Airways ALPA MEC CODE-A-PHONE UPDATE - June 25, 2007

This is Arnie Gentile with a US Airways MEC update for Monday, June 25th, with three new items.

Item 1. As a reminder, we anticipate that the Executive Council will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, June 26th to consider the validity of the Nicolau award. ALPA leadership must think like pilots, to lead pilots. The Executive Council should have no misconceptions concerning the US Airways Pilot’s resolve. We have posted the email contact information for the ALPA Officers and members of the Executive Council and ask all pilots to communicate their views directly to ALPA International leadership.

Item 2. The Safety Committee has posted two new bulletins under What's New. The first bulletin concerns laser illumination hazards that continue to be a threat to aviation, and the second bulletin advises that runway names at O'Hare will begin to be changed as part of a phased re-designation program. The renamed runways are listed in this bulletin.

Item 3. The R & I Committee has been informed by the company that after an extensive evaluation Fidelity Investments has been selected to continue as the record keeper for the Retirement Savings Plan for Pilots (DC Plan) and the 401K Plan. Fidelity can offer our pilots a one stop shop for all their investment and retirement needs. New enhanced retirement planning tools, investing tutorials and market research data will be available to all employees. Preferred trading rates will also be a part of the new contract. As we indicated earlier this month, final fiduciary agreement language is being worked out between the company and ALPA's legal staff. Upon completion, we anticipate a 100% brokerage option on the DC Plan and a 50% brokerage option on the 401K Plan. ALPA and other labor organizations will have a full briefing from the company in Charlotte, July 12th. More information will be following.

"Fuel Awareness "

FUEL: Carrying excess fuel means carrying extra weight. The flight plan header shows the cost of carrying additional fuel (weight). More importantly, this extra fuel may reduce allowable payload which imposes additional loss of revenue. This cost multiplied by thousands of flights per year adds up quickly. It costs fuel to carry fuel.

USA320Pilot comments: The ALPA W.A.R. sentiment has now changed. Now the union wants the pilots to conserve fuel. Why? In my opinion, with the MEC negotiating a pay raise outside of JNC talks, ALPA wants the East pilots to show management how good of an operation they can fly, which will help create a classic "whip saw".
 
I think they mean for Captains to call and request additional "comfort" fuel to preclude landing with VFR target minimum fuel.

Adding an additional 2500-3500 pounds of fuel to arrive with greater than 7 or 8000 arrival fuel is not really such a bad idea, especially in todays uncertain ATC environment.
