The company said in court documents that flights would operate normally and Bruce Lakefield, the company's chief executive, said the probability of shutting down was low.
"I think we're here for basically very limited reasons," Lakefield said in an interview. He added that he did not see a need to shrink the carrier.
"They have an enormous ability to use the judge to impose settlements with the unions," said Darryl Jenkins, director of the aviation institute at George Washington University.
Judge Stephen Mitchell, who handled the previous US Airways bankruptcy case, will hold the first hearing on Monday.

"I remain convinced that a restructured US Airways with competitive costs ... is an attractive investment," said David Bronner.
"There is only one way for the company to emerge from Chapter 11, and that involves lower costs, including lower labor costs," said Bronner, adding he would remain chairman during the judicial restructuring. RSA is responsible for a $25 billion asset portfolio.
