Freely admitting that a rumour heard by a humble passanger has no basis in reality, but someone told me that United was considering a LHR to India flight. Did they not do this at one time? I recall a few years past having heard that it was possible to fly 'around the world" on United.
I am sure that with all that United has to do at the moment that this would be a bit of a stretch, but I did hear it from a colleague who supposedly heard it from one of your ground staff who heard it from....... ;)
Cheers

Not a likely occurance, UKridge. Possible, but not likely.

That is correct, but there was a change of planes. There was both eastbound and westbound round the world. Flight numbers were 1 and 2. I believe at one time the Eastbound routing was SFO-JFK-LHR-DEL-HKG-SFO. London-Delhi-Hong Kong was flown by a 767-300 .

Yes, but also a few years back Rono Dutta, who had ascended to 2nd in command, had tried to scheduled an ORD/DEL flight across the North Pole, but when the USAir/United deal did not go through, both Dutta and Goodwin were filed. The flight never materialized. For anyone interested, Dutta is now CEO of some small indian airline based in Delhi. He apparently has grandiose ideas of turning it into an international carrier.

That idea is not dead. I can tell you that plans are being kicked around for a polar flight ORD-DEL, as of Summer 2004. Flies right over Kabul, Afghanistan and Islamabad, Pakistan. Better go at night.
