UAL sent legal papers to the NMB to delay the AMFA vote so their toy union
wont get thrown off the property.

Maverick union raps United
Organization seeking to unseat Machinists criticizes vote delay

A maverick union seeking to represent United Airlines'' mechanics said the carrier is shamelessly wasting money by seeking to delay a representation vote by six months.

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association wants to unseat the International Association of Machinists as the bargaining agent for the 10,300 mechanics.

The union filed a request for an election with the National Mediation Board in March. United on April 1 asked the board to delay evaluating the request by 180 days. The airline said the representation dispute could undermine its efforts to reorganize in bankruptcy court.

The carrier has elected to shamelessly squander its self-described scarce economic resources by bringing a frivolous motion to delay an election, AMFA attorneys said in a written response to United''s action.

AMFA is not affiliated with the AFL-CIO, an umbrella union organization. AMFA represents mechanics at Southwest Airlines and Northwest Airlines and has long coveted United''s mechanics, including the 830 in Denver.

The union has said an election could come in June if the National Mediation Board rules that a majority of workers filed genuine signature cards in support of a vote. The board oversees the industry''s labor relations.

Attorneys for Chicago-based United said the representation dispute would inevitably impose substantial distractions and financial pressures on the carrier at a time when it faces steep financial hurdles.

The IAM has said AMFA''s foray marked a potentially fatal distraction.

The mediation board continues to study the case, a spokesman said.

The IAM and United reached a tentative agreement on long-term concessions for mechanics April 11. The rank and file will vote on the deal, which calls for a 13 percent pay cut and other changes, on Tuesday.

If AMFA were to win representation of the workers, it would inherit any contract that mechanics ratified under the leadership of the IAM. AMFA also would inherit any court-ordered pact.

You know what? Timing is everything!! Now is not the time for AMFA to organize the UAL mechanics. AMFA''s timing now to organize while UAL is still in bankruptcy would demonstrate to the DIP financiers and the Court that the employees are not together in trying to save the airline. If there is remotely any trouble brewing among the employee ranks, the DIP financiers can force UAL into Chap. 7 liquidation. Its as simple as that! This could be a move by Southwest Airlines, represented by AMFA, to upset the employees at UAL and force Chap. 7 liquidation. Is this what you UAL mechanics want? Who wins by taking UAL off the street?? Think about it, UAL mechanics lose...Southwest and Jet Blue wins!!!

What we want is a fair vote. The financiers arent going to throw away the money
they have already invested in UAL because the mechanics want different representation.SWA has nothing to do with this either we have been wanting AMFA way before SWA voted them in and UAL filed chap-11.

When you can''t vote for union leaders you don''t really have a union.

Management has infiltrated the union and has many people in lead positions.

ualflinhi,
I disagree with your point of view here. The amfa push screwed up our negotiations once before and it would be shear stupidity to have the same thing happen again.
You can still have your vote for amfa, just delayed while the company gets things smoothed out.
Put your hatred on the back burner for a short time and let your company and union at least try to save your job and livihood.
I will be here when you start bitching about amfa too.

Here at USAirways the Tampa hanger personel were very pro-AMFA and very outspoken about it. Result Tampa shut down and maintenance moved to a dump of a facility called Hanger 1 and Hanger 2 in Pittsburgh.Just what the old home guard at the IAM wanted! Good luck!

At Southwest they voted in the AMFA, and then the teamsters denied their withdrawal cards. Meaning that if they ever wish to rejoin everyone pays initiation fees.
