But Robert W. Mann, a consultant based in Port Washington, N.Y., said US Airways' problems stemmed from its strategy in the 1990's of relying on mergers to expand operations without streamlining its costs.

"They're not a victim of low-fare competition," he said. "They're a victim of a decade of not getting around to solve their problems."

And who did UA Merge with since then? The only thing UA did was the purchase of Pan Am's Pacific division, not exactly what I would classify as a true Merger.

The point isn't mergers. The point is buying "things", whether it's "business select" or another airline, instead of fixing the things you already have that are aren't working.

There is no doubt in my mind as the article said, the situation that we are in are due to previous business chioces. Funny how the past can come back to haunt you.

That happens to be the smartest thing I've ever heard a consultant say about US Airways....but, duh, the average CSR, mech or ute could tell you that.

This topic has been discussed many times here, and most raods lead back to the
Uncle Ed days. Some here refuse to accept the fact that the downhill slide started at the end of his era, but in fact it did. Could he see the Future? We all know that he could not have predicted it or the 9/11 fallout. My point here is that If he had seen the Mergers thru, the Comapny would have had more cash on hand and would have been in a better cash position to deal with the LCC's and 9/11 to a certain extent. After 15 bad years of bleeding cash, it doesn't take much to sink the ship. We all know that this Airline on had 2 profitable years (1996/97) since the PS & PI Mergers. There were a lot of things at this Airline that needed to be dealt with that were left on Auto Pilot as we went from one CEO to another. It is all water under the bridge now, but it was the beginning of the end for US.
