29 Years ago starting on May 5th, 1981, 10 Hunger Strikers starved themselves in the H block of the Maze prison. The first to pass was Bobby Sand, Member of parliment.
The hunger strike took place in 1981 and was a showdown between the prisoners and the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. One hunger striker, Bobby Sands, was elected as a Member of Parliament during the strike, prompting media interest from around the world.[2] The strike was called off after ten prisoners had starved themselves to death—including Sands, whose funeral was attended by 100,000 people and was the driving force that enabled Sinn Féin to become a mainstream political party.
So this post is in honor of:
Bobby Sands 1954-1981, Member of Parliment
Francis Hughes
Raymond McCreesh
Patsy O’Hara
Joe McDonnell
Martin Hurson
Kevin Lynch
Kieran Doherty
Thomas McElwee
Michael Devine
It occurred to me that just like in 1776 the British had to be retaught the concept of freedom and liberty.
