US Airwheys announced late today a large aircraft order to be added to the flight schedule this summer. US Airwheys president Skip Kerby today announced the airline will be acquiring 56 DC-3 aircraft from an aircraft leasing company in South America.

The aircraft will be added to the fleet once they have undergone an extensive overhaul at the company’s maintenance facility in Alabama. It’s expected the first aircraft will be flying US Airwheys’ routes sometime in July.

Kerby said “these aircraft will fit in nicely with our Heritage Fleet and passengers will be able to experience our new “Heritage Serviceâ€￾ we will begin in conjunction with these aircraft entering service.â€￾ Kerby went on to add that the “Heritage Serviceâ€￾ include such throwback amenities such as wicker seats, un-pressurized comfort, and new box lunch cuisine and do-it-yourself entertainment.

The aircraft will have a top speed of 230 miles per hour and should allow the passengers ample time to arrive at their destination about the same time their baggage does. The flight will be cruising along at about 7,000 feet allowing a scenic view of the country side once the aircraft gets off of the ground. The company feels the added enjoyment of such an experience will keep their minds off of any delays they might encounter at their hubs airports.

Mavis Khrist, the airline’s vice president, sales and marketing said “we paid over $120 million for these aircraft and we think the flying public will really enjoy the experience.â€￾ He added, “the aircraft will dovetail nicely into the computer system we just transferred over to and I expect few problems if any with the transition.â€￾

The DC-3’s range will allow the airline to begin a new “Heritage Routeâ€￾ this summer. The initial route will depart Boston’s International airport and arrive late the next day in Los Angeles. Stops will include Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Springfield, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, Winslow and finally Los Angeles. Future routes will include stops at Phoenix, Las Vegas, Greensboro, Newark and Washington D.C. “A real treatâ€￾ added Kerby.

“Once we get this service off the ground we feel US Airwheys will be an innovative leader in air travel in America,â€￾ noted Khrist.

To add to the heritage feel of new DC-3 fleet, Cherry Chamblim, VP Inflight, said that there will be new uniforms designed for the stewardess which include hats and gloves!!

are they going to be heated for the winter months while ron at many northeast cities??
Sorry That would cost money fro Flight Ops. If they heat the cabin, it would cause flight delays when the first flight would be scheduled, due to the windows steaming up and icing over. Company will not hire an ice scraper, even buy one.
