This Just In: Swa Might Expand

I'd think Southwest would look at moving into Cincinnati more than Atlanta. AirTran's home hive isn't exactly ripe for the picking and is infested with other LCCs (Spirit, Frontier, etc.).

Infested? Interesting choice of words.

The problem right now is that WN isn't getting any planes from Boeing because of the machinist's strike. Hopefully, that'll be settled soon.

MSY dropping from 56 daily departures to zero to two (as of next Tuesday) frees up some short-term capacity, hopefully until the strike is over and deliveries recommence.

IF SWA is serious about going in for the kill, they will be acquiring some more 737-300s and -700s from the leasing companies. If no new a/c are acquired, this can not happen. Just my thoughts...........

SWA has never demonstrated a desire to "kill" anyone. They remain profitable by focusing solely on their own business model and taking advantage of opportunities that fit that model. Going outside that plan creates an atmosphere of uncertainty about where the airline is headed.

That being said, yes, SWA is looking to acquire aircraft. Unfortunately, the vast majority of available planes are older, high-time, and high-cycle birds that would require significant expenditures to bring on line.

I'd be surprised if Southwest acquires anymore 737-300s. Herb, et. al. have said on repeated occasions, 700s, 700s,700s. I doubt there are too many of those available on the used market.

Pete McGlade did mention to us back in January that he knew all 11(?) of Aloha Airline's -700s are leased! :)

What's Aloha's current status? Are they trying to find someone to take over the leases of those planes? Thanks.

Doubt it. That is their business. Can't make $$ w/o those planes.

Don't know if this was already announced. But just read that PHL-PIT will go up to 6 a day and PHL-TPA will go up to 3 a day. If these were already announced then they are just moving up the starting date.

SWA reported that some previously announced service would be started early. The availability of aircraft caused by the downsizing of New Orleans flight activity made this possible.

One new route starting 10/02: MDW-SAT, one flight each way, plus additional flights on seven other routes.

Looks like there's going to be plenty of more opportunity to expand when Rita hits HOU.
