Sure, its been a high flier the past year, but America West (nyse: LCC - news - people ) and US Airways remain a dysfunctional airline. The two carriers still haven’t worked out their culture and pay differences, not to mention the combined airline’s soiled image with travelers.

Which brings us to why Parker is pushing so hard for Delta. With the stroke of a name change, Parker could wipe out years of bad memories. Delta may be suffering, but the carrier has a reputation for coddling customers.

Delta hardly has an image of coddling customers anymore, especially in Atlanta. That's one of the primary reasons Delta had a huge ad campaign focussed on Atlanta in 2004. Terry Trippler recently made this point on the Today show when the US-DL merger was announced. Their satisfaction ratings in Atlanta have gone down significantly, much of it due to the decision to not match Airtran's fares and thus cause tremendous ill will among their most loyal constituents.

Additionally, you can't honestly believe USAirways is trying to merge for the simple reason of rainsing consumer ratings. Parker would be fired immediately for not watching out for his shareholders...

maybe not 'coddling', but Delta is a far better name than US Airways with the traveling public.

but I agree with the rest of your take that doing this just for the name is insane.

Parker has been reading too many of his own press clippings. LCC needs to get their house in order first or he'll end up killing the airline he runs (and Delta too if they are successful in buying them).
