Today was (how shall I say) an interesting day at Amtrak, at Union Station in CHI, at my new position as a UNION ticket clerk.

It was like virtually every other day at 2pm with long lines.   Ahhh, but today was special. Today was Election day for the Top Dogs in the IAM.  (We're  TCU-IAM)  Our manager was in her usual position directing 'traffic' towards our positions BEFORE the last passenger BARELY vacated our individual positions.  (Amtrak is very strict about our 30 min. lunches.) (Thirty minutes means 30 mins, not 30.5 minutes)  The local president reminded us PM shift crew, to VOTE before the 6pm deadline, AND that we DO NOT have to use lunch time to vote.
Soooooo, a few of us, Locked up our Cash drawers, removed our keys, left the loooong passenger line standing, and stood in the looong line waiting to vote. (Ate a plate of food the UNION brought in, while standing in line)..........  NOT a peep was heard from our CS Manager, who mysteriously DISSAPEARED, wearing a Looooong Puss !

"MY", I said to myself. She Never said a F'n word about us 'Walking Off' in the middle of a very busy time. ????

(Maybe it was because of that Lovely young Spanish Girl from the DEPARTMENT of LABOR, who was OBSERVING all facets of the Election)

Ahhh.  The aroma of UNIONISM, in the early Afternoon. It sure can't be beat !

You do understand that because of examples like this people hate unions right? The fact that you seem to gloating over the fact that you left people waiting in line because your union could not come up with a better way to vote is pathetic. You should be ashamed of your self. I know I am.

When people condem unions, remember this post of yours.

couldn't agree more Tree, I was thinking how thrilled the customers(paying his check) must have been waiting and missing their trains. Disgraceful!

I'll go even one step further. The fact that you are bragging about this and obviously think this sets a good example explains why you are in a union and probably need one.

You give unions and liberals a bad name and I am embarrassed by you.

Too lazy to vote on their own time.
Absolutely, this is why unions are hated because of silly **** like this.

I think Hell has frozen over, Tree. +1.

Both of my parents sat on the opposite side of the table from unions, served on various BOD's. He HATED unions and I had many debates with him on the essential role unions play in aviation. My mother told the story of company credit cards being used for, let's just call it theft. She thought the union would shield her for criminal activity. Bottom line, after the past few years dealing with one in particular. I'm finding common ground with some of their thoughts.

Like how you added the racist and sexist overtone to your dumb ass post with the "lovely young Spanish girl". That post clearly lays bare all the worst of humanity that resides in that small little mind of yours.

I am quite sure you find nothing wrong with what you wrote. I sincerely hope that you are not being emulated by anyone in your life.

You clearly have no idea what the labor movement is/was about.

^^^^. This

Unions had their use when labor conditions were deplorable and dangerous. Seems like all they are doing now is help the company screw over the employee and protect lazy pieces of crap, present company INCLUDED.

And why are you surprised?

Battle of the Overpass, May 26, 1937

The story of the labor struggle reached a turning point with the National Labor Relations Act in 1935. Informally known as the Wagner Act, after Senator Robert Wagner of New York, it established workers' rights to collective bargaining and sought to stop unfair practices by employers, employees, and unions. Finally, union organizers felt they had a mechanism to organize the mass production industries, including the reluctant automobile industry. By 1936 and 1937, the fledgling United Auto Workers (UAW) had coordinated successful sit-down strikes at both General Motors and Chrysler. However, Ford Motor Company proved slightly more resistant to unionization. The UAW felt it had a sufficient base for membership at Ford's Rouge plant, but the workers were apprehensive because of their unfamiliarity with unions and Ford Motor's anti-union stance.

However, in May 1937, union organizers obtained a permit to distribute handbills at the gates of the Rouge plant. fifty union representatives, including many women, arrived at the plant to distribute circulars which cited the Wagner Act and entreated workers to join the UAW. Walter P. Reuther, Richard T. Frankensteen, Richard Merriweather, Ralph Dunham, and Rev. Raymond P. Sanford among others left for the plant early in the afternoon and arrived an hour before the change of shifts at the main entrance of the Rouge, Gate 4. The entrance was at the end of an overpass that the company had built across Miller Road so the shift changing would not interfere with traffic. The UAW representatives talked with reporters and posed for photographers of the Detroit newspapers. Meantime, several men had been stationed around the entrance to the Rouge including Angelo Caruso, boss of the Down River gang, wrestlers Warshon Sarkisien and Ted Gries, boxer Oscar Jones, and Ford servicemen. The organizers were ordered to leave, but witnesses say, before they even had a chance, the attack began.

Frankensteen's coat was pulled over his arms. He was then kicked in the head, kidneys, and groin. Witnesses also testified that as he lay on the ground, the attackers ground their heels in his stomach. Reuther was picked up and thrown down repeatedly and was kicked in the face and body. He was then thrown down the steps of the overpass. Merriweather's back was broken, and Dunham was also severely injured. The women too were attacked. Newspapers and magazines published the photographs all over the country and several witnesses testified before the National Labor Relations Board. The NLRB found Ford in violation of the Wagner Act and ordered it to stop interfering with union organization. Henry Ford and the company denied the charges, but the Battle of the Overpass had already become a lasting symbol in the labor struggle
.

The foundation of unionism is noble. The struggle to earn a decent wage and the expectation of decent working conditions should be applauded.

I as a taxpayer who is supplementing Wal-Mart's profit margin have a huge issue with it.

That being said having the traveling public pay the price to stroke your ego so you could "get one over on the company" is stupidity incarnate.

You think you won a small victory but the truth is you are a saboteur of your own cause.

That's kinda sad... I've been trying to get out of ticketing and into Assistant Conductor for a few months now (six to be precise) but to be honest... Ticket clerks start out at $15.75 then go as high as $21.00 even ($21.75 with the lead differential)... Maybe I shouldn't take the step down (especially since I'm at 80% now).

You make at least $15.75 and have full benefits (http://bletamt.org/downloads/Benefits%20Handbook%202008.pdf).

You have a no skill job they could literally get almost ANYONE off the street to do and you are going out of your way to damage your companies brand. You really are a fool.

Nobody bashed unions in general. They (me) bashed your and your behavior. If your union local condones it, shame on them.

I don't give a chit why. The problem is the action above prevent a union from doing decent work for others. Not many people think it's the unions right to strong arm a company into giving unskilled labor like a ticket agent or a car assembly worker $30+ an hour. The support for unions came because of 7 day work weeks, unsafe work conditions, child labor and the like. The support does not come to allow you to screw over the customers so you can vote on company time when you should have come in early or stayed late.

The fact that you have zero support from anyone here including a commie pinko liberal like me should give you a clue.
