Delta asks to cut back gates at OIA
Closing of 16 gates would end airline's Orlando dominance
Struggling Delta Air Lines asked in a New York bankruptcy court on Thursday to close 16 of its 24 gates at Orlando International Airport in order to further cut costs as it tries to emerge from its financial woes.
The airline says it will not reduce the number of daily flights, now averaging 115, but will cut the number of seats available. A Jan. 5 hearing has been scheduled to hear the request and, if approved, the airline will close the gates by Jan. 18.
Delta had been Orlando International Airport's largest carrier for years, but Southwest Airlines eclipsed it earlier this year. After Delta, American Airlines, Orlando's AirTran Airways and US Airways are the largest carriers
