SWA becomes launch customer for 737-700 MAX

There are actually a couple things that are more significant than that WN will be the launch customer for the the 737 7 MAX.
First, WN has managed to remove dozens of firm orders from its order book over the next 5-7 years. Even with WN's financial strength, they recognize there are limits to the number of new aircraft WN can successful induct into its fleet. They have made the decision to keep that number under 40 for a number of years.
Second is that WN is looking to the used aircraft market to help meet its near term fleet needs. Despite all the talk about fleet commonality, WN is able to incorporate aircraft from other carriers into its fleet.
Third is that WN is maintaining its focus on the 737-700/ 7 MAX size aircraft. The 800/8 MAX will have a role at WN but WN is not abandoning its preference for the smaller aircraft.
A good move for WN and for Boeing but the context and how WN is managing its fleet is equally as significant.
