Tourism Minister Hon Charles Clifford on Thursday 9 February revealed that a partnership had been forged between the national carrier Cayman Airways and the US low-cost carrier Spirit Airways which has just entered the local market.
At 12:15 pm last Thursday, Spirit’s inaugural flight 421 from Fort Lauderdale touched down at the Owen Roberts Airport to signal the official start of daily flights to Grand Cayman from the US.
Moments later, Mr Clifford told the ribbon cutting ceremony at the airport that Cayman Airways would provide ground handling and maintenance services for Spirit here.
“Despite the healthy rivalry that exists between the two carriers and indeed all airlines servicing the Cayman Islands, Spirit has chosen to contract with Cayman Airways,†he said.
The Tourism Minister said further talks were underway but he stopped short of saying what other projects the two airlines were likely to collaborate on in the future.
