Southwest Adding DEN-SLC/BWI

Southwest is plotting their DEN operations very carefully. They have been watching United and Frontier co-exist for quite some time, because mainly, they both do not offer "WN" style fares. While Frontier has caused United lots of pressure on their yields at DEN, they haven't had the same effect WN has. Which is why you've seen WN enter in markets that are quite highly priced, which is aimed solely at United, will also cause Frontier to respond with lower fares, which will not bode well for anyone out of DEN except the consumers.

I would expect WN to move into markets that neither United or Frontier serves (if those exist) or in markets such as SLC, where you have a walk up fare well over $300 per direction. My money: California markets.

Well no offense but it looks like WN is just flying from DEN to a lot of its stronghold operations, PHX, LAS, MDW, and now BWI. Which definitely make sense but in no way are these routes monopolized by one particular airline like many of the of the PHL routes were.
look at the competition

LAS-HP, UA, F9
PHX-HP, UA, F9
MDW-UA, F9
BWI-UA, F9
SLC-UA, F9, DL

A lot of people are saying DEN could turn out to be a similar situation as PHL. Well note all the competition at DEN that i listed and then note all the competition WN faced in PHL

PVD-US
MHT-US
BDL-US
RDU-US (American Eagle for a short time)
MDW-none directly to MDW
HOU-none directly to HOU
MSY-US
PIT-US
PHX-US, HP (now all US)
LAS-US, HP(now all US)
now WN faces a lot of competition on the PHL-Florida routes but they are in high demand from PHL

can you tell the difference, now i'm no expert on DEN and maybe there are markets from DEN that only have UA or F9 service where WN can come in a drive the prices down. But in PHL, WN was really going for routes mainly flown by US who jacked up the prices

I guess my point is that Frontier hasn't trashed the yields out of Denver like Southwest does when it enteres markets. I am not using this term "trashed" to downplay WN.. they're a fantastic airline at delivering what they promise.. but they aren't charging an arm and a leg like UA/F9 do on many routes.

Had F9 priced many of these routes LOWER, I doubt DEN would have been as an attractive move for them as it is now.
