And finally, a little glimpse at the possible cost:

The baggage problem boosted business for Manchester Baggage Express in Manchester.

"We were not prepared for that much. This was a surprise," owner Marc Boucher said. "We feel bad for everybody."

The company will handle 400 to 500 pieces of luggage daily during the Christmas stretch, twice the usual amount, he said. "We have four or five waves (of drivers) going everywhere in five different directions."

Since last Thursday, his company has delivered bags to as far away as Bangor, Maine, and "all over in Vermont. People are on vacation," he said. His company gets $250 for a delivery to Bangor, Maine, and $8 for each Manchester stop.

An employer can only take so much from its employees without consequences.
It appears that USAir management has crossed the line and a percentage of your employees feel like they have nothing left to lose.
This is not really a union issue because I've worked at non-union jobs where people who wanted to be off for a Holiday called in sick.

If the pay and benefits[including retirement] were still at industry standards employees would be less likely to jepordize a job with good pay and benefits.
I'm not saying the sick calls are right or wrong just an opinion of why they happened.

I think it was Sir Issac Newton that stated "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"

How about the USA management looking closely at the way they operate an airline instead of blaming union employees for being overcompensated? What a novel idea.Mr.Lakefield needs to look in the mirror to find the reason for a failed airline.
