NEW YORK (AP) — A computer outage at United Airlines delayed thousands of travelers on Thursday and embarrassed the airline at a time when it’s trying to win back customers after glitches earlier this year.

The two-hour outage held up a total of 636 of the 5,679 United flights scheduled for Thursday, the airline said. That included 257 planes delayed directly by the outage, with the rest caused by planes that were late to arrive for subsequent flights, the airline said....
While US Airways picked HP's version of SHARES over Sabre for passenger functions (much to the chagrin of Eastside customer service personnel), they did keep Sabre for dispatch and ops functions.

It was not Shares that went down, it was Unimatic. Only UA flights were delayed because they use this to flight plan while former CO flights do not.
Unimatic is well over 30 years old and will continue to have these issues until UA decides to upgrade to the Commodore 64.

Unimatic was leading edge in 1947.
Now not so much. IIRC, most 'United' Unimatic programmers were laid off in 2002-2003.
It's such a behemoth that has so much data over the years and 'special' programs that Oracle would charge an arm and a leg to upgrade it, if even possible. It's a dinosaur that is almost impossible to replace or integrate into a new system.
Then add in Filemaker forms, interfaces and scripts it is a huge task to overcome.
"Someone" should have made a decision long ago to replace it.

And Shares was designed for the 60's... United had a good system called Fast Air...But the CEO wasn't going to hear how good it was because, he's on the HP board and wants to get his share of the money. Now it only take 3-4 agents to get a flight out with shares, and only 1 agent with Fast Air. I guess the good side of that is the unemployment rate is going down...
